I am planning on starting a thread on ERV's as evidence of human and chimp/gorilla common ancestory within the next week. If anyone has info on this, please post it here. This thread is not meant as a debate on the issue, only as a repository for online information pertaining to human ERV's. All types of resources, including those that attempt to refute human/chimp common ancestory, are welcome.
Specifically, I am looking for:
--Specific placement of ERV's within genomes.
--Mutational analysis
--Arguments pertaining to the randomness of viral insertion.
--Possible ERV role in gene regulation.
Thanks.

Loudmouth,
A while back I found an online creationist piece that cites some ERV (HERV-K) data to refute evolution. The article is a bunch of quotes and citations taken completely out of context, with the argument being something along the lines of if scientists can not define with extreme precision exactly how similar humans and chimps are (is it 98.4%? or 97.6%?), then evolution must be false. Anyway, the article discusses human evolution, creationism, and HERVs so it fits your query. it is here: Page not found - Apologetics Press
more later,
Mike

Good to see you again, Mammuthus
But I don't get the point of your post.

Mammuthus,
Long time, no see. When I wrote the OP I had you in mind, but felt a little depressed because I hadn't seen you around for a while. Thanks for the refs, it looks like I have my work cut out for me. Been a while since I wrote anything resembling a review paper, much less a version for general consumption.
And thanks to Mike as well. All evidence is welcome, and I will try to incorporate the creationist/apologetic criticisms.

Around but not back
Hi Loudmouth,
There is a textbook on all things HERV coming out soon but I don't think it hit the market yet. If you go to PubMed, look up Lwer R and you will also get a bunch of review articles on HERVs, though they are a bit dated. Not exactly a ton of us working on the subject
Unfortunately because of time constraints I will continue to be in lurker mode (so I can't cure your depression ). Also, the new overwhelming Administrator control and intrusiveness I find is stifling debate, driving some of my favorite people off the site (or at least shutting down their participation), and generally lowering the quality of the forum. So I still feel no reason to post..at least not regularly anymore. When I stated that I felt the coddling of creationists was an error, Moose made it clear where I could stick my opinion, so...I left/became a lurker....but your request for information was something I could not resist (though I almost could not post it since I could not remember my password anymore )..I am writing a paper on a very similar subject..most of the references were right in front of me
cheers and keep up the good fight
M
