Peace everyone,
As of now I'm starting to plan my future after this masters course. Since I'm considering a career in science therefore the most obvious way is to do a PhD. I know some of you guys are scientists, and now I ask the scientists of EvC:
Is anyone looking for a PhD student?
I'm currently studying Taxonomy & Biodiversity at the NHM, London, until this September. I am currently supervised by Drs P. Eggleton & N. MacLeod on a project that involves termites and morphometry.
My specialization in taxonomy are termites, but I am open to other possibilities including working with other animals, plants, or doing ecology, conservation, paleontology or theoretical stuff. And you all know my track record around here since 2002.
I hope this might interest the people addressed. It would be nice to work with one of you.

Hi Andya,
Can't help you personally but I know that people who study social behaviour in insects are always complaining there aren't enough taxonomists around. Ant taxonomy appears to be a big thing right now, you might want to look at the people who have collaborated with Barry Bolton and see if any of them might take you on. Otherwise thrips taxonomy is a big open field.
Good luck,
mick

Let's see systematic about this:
1) what's your resident status in the UK?
2) Where are you prepared to go? UK, Europe, World?
With a few more details, we may be able to identity areas of interest and possible angles for you to exploit.

Just a question. Shouldn't whoever you're working with right now be able to recommend you to somebody? One of my prof introduced me to the scientist I'm working with right now.

maybe, maybe not. It's not uncommon in the UK for PhD students to have to find their own supervisor (I sort of fluked that one).

1) 'Foreign student'. This year is my first year living in the UK.
2) Anywhere, but I prefer English-speaking countries, and from among these I prefer UK or Canada over US (it is currently hard to obtain US visa for Indonesians) or Australia.

Entering a Ph. D program from the street
I'm not sure if this is OK, and Andya please let me know if it's not. But since this thread went quiet, and I do have related questions, I'll post here.
I'm looking for advice on how to enter a Ph. D program. Below is my story and what I've been trying to do. I've been failing, so any suggestions would be welcome!
Anyway, here's my story: I'm a ... guy... trying to get back into graduate school. I've been out of school since 1999, when i graduated with a Computer Science degree.
Since 2003, I've been studying to enter a Ph. D program in cognitive neuroscience. I went to school for a while (at the University of Washington), but I left in order to come to Japan. While in Japan, I've been studying ... at home.
But apparently my approach is not working--I haven't been accepted to my top choice schools. My recommendations are mostly old (one from University of Washington is new) and I don't have any academic papers to submit. I have about 9 months of university lab experience. Mostly I've just been reading primary source papers and books on the topic.
Next week, I'll be returning to the US, and I'll go to summer school at one of my preferred schools. I'm hoping to establish connections there, as well as enter a lab (hopefully for a paid experience, I'm poor now, but I'm up for volunteering if necessary). Outside of this, however, I don't know what to do.
I am also interested in studying in Japan, but I know even less about that. Studying in the UK may work for me... but I do have a girlfriend here, so I'd have to work out that situation.
It's been over two years, and I'm not in school yet, and I'll go through my third round of applications in 6 months. Any comments / suggestions would be VERY welcome.
