Re: ultimate critter
yes calfornia grizzlies which i showed weighed 900-1200 also i got a book grizzly the good the bad the ugly that said that their were reports of 900kg calfornia grizzlies, so im guess the grizzly that fought the lion was atleast double its weight, meaning it was totally unfair get another equal sized bear and the lion would win
also did u read my posts obviously not, i said average lions are 420, but delta lions are around 485 lbs for males read my web sites, also first off male grizzlies are 1.5 times larger than females so i can post web sites, so the weight range would be like 350-750 which is reasonable, remerber these grizzlies are exctinct they have been exctinct for over 100 years, anyway read my posts u might learn something on delta lions

Re: ultimate critter
also gary nuback has studied big cats for a hundred years, and he sais big cats are the strongest, anyway that website says that tigers frequently beat black bears, so obviously ur bear beats cat theorey is wrong, and since lions beat tigers, lion and tigers beat black bears

Re: ultimate critter
now adays bears dont exceed 1400lbs but back in the 1800s the grizzlies were much larger, in fact one of the reasons they are smaller now adays is because of humans, naturally the bears became smaller and less dominant with the arrival of humans

Re: ultimate critter
http://www.lioncrusher.com/animal.asp?animal=88
it sais male brown bears are typically 1.5 to 2 times larger than females
so yes if a calfornia grizzly according to grizzly the good the bad the ugly is 900-1200lbs and a large one 2000lbs than a female would be roughly 400-800lbs which is quite reasonable considering calfornia grizzlies were much larger than present day grizzlies
male calfornia grizzly 900-1200
female 400-800

Re: ultimate critter
anyway a 900-1200lb calfornia grizzly is totally unfair vs any lion
but get a 500lb delta lion vs a 500lb grizzly and the lion will destroy the grizzly

Your expert (Gary Nuback) against the numerous bear experts I quoted (two of which are major scientists)and the website that showed how bears are stronger than cats (the same site you quoted showing that lions have the stronger paw swipe than tigers)?
The biology of both animals speaks for it'self: Bears are far stronger.

Where are not just discussing delat lions, but lions as a whole.
Even you admit they average 420 lbs.
And delta lions wheren't the biggest: American Lions (Panthera Leo Atrox) weighed up to over half a ton. European cave lions where even bigger. Both are extinct, but would thrash your delta lions.
BTW: Please use periods. It is hard to understand where you are going if you dont use them.

Delta lions
I studied the Tsaro Lions you're talking about. Very impressive beasts. Even though they still cannot match bears in terms of strength, if they are ferocious enough and good fighters, they could defeat a equal-sized bear in a brawl, just as a Jaguar would probably beat a black bear in a fight.
But Grizzlies are built like sherman tanks. THey have a hump of muscle on their shulders that gives them more strength and power. And lets not forget that Grizzlies are ferocious in and of themselves.

Barbary's
BTW: just did some checking: Barbary's are now thought to have weighed 420 lbs on average.
Here's some sources about 'em, if you are interested.

Giving the size range of galifornia Grizzlies being 300-1200 and above, it could have been 400 lbs as well as 1000. It didn't have to be 1200 lbs.

Re: ultimate critter
http://www.bluelion.org/recently_extinct.htm
The Barbary lion was the largest subspecies of lion, weighing from 500-600 lbs for males
also read this
Weighing around 500 pounds and measure up to 10 feet from nose to tail.
so ur wrong the grizzlies that fought the lions were in the 900-1200lb range, meaning that its A TOTALLY UNFAIR MATCH

Re: ultimate critter
also the book big cats of the millunium, by paul franco, claims that big cats are unrivaled in terms of lb for lb strength, so ur bear experts are wrong
