If you read the two articles you will see that they are not similar and do not say the same things at all.

Boiling water that has contaminates already in it will concentrate those contaminates as the water steams away. So if your water is already poisonous then boiling it will make it more poisonous. The "re-boiling" stuff is superfluous because allowing water to cool in between boilings makes your poisonous water, already concentrated to a more poisonous state, just a bit more poisonous as the contaminates become even more concentrated. Adding less poisonous water to the concentrated poisonous water will make the contaminates less concentrated and less poisonous until you boil that batch down to desired poisonous levels.
Kinda like reducing spaghetti sauce through simmering for hours boils away the water concentrating the flavors to a delectable state unless you're really bad at making spaghetti sauces at which point you will have concentrated ick.

Just as boiling maple sap concentrates it to produce syrup, boiling water concentrates whatever else is dissolved or suspended in it. Boiling down water will do the same, gradually concentrating whatever else was in the water, even if you do it by boiling away 1% of the water, letting it cool, then boiling away another 1% of the water, then letting it cool again, etc. Here in NE iron and manganese are very common groundwater contaminants - if you boil down a pot of unfiltered well water by around 50% it will actually become cloudy with contaminants.
Repeated boiling would seem unlikely to produce different chemicals than a single boiling, but the real world is a complicated place, and the list of possible contaminants across the country huge, and the potential interactions between various contaminants even huger, so it also seems unlikely that all water everywhere would be safe to boil repeatedly. My own opinion: Reboiling water is probably without risk in most circumstances, but unless you're using distilled water you're going to increase the concentrations of contaminants which will probably affect taste, so why do it? --Percy

Boiling water does kill most of the bacteria in it. Other than that, it doesn't do too much for "contaminants."

The trick is to first boil the water. And then you add the contaminants (such as a tea bag).Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

you're going to increase the concentrations of contaminants which will probably affect taste, so why do it? I think the reason it gets done is that it is convenient. You fill the tea kettle, sit it on the stove, and then as you need tea/instant coffee during the morning, you simply reheat without a trip to the sink until the teapot is nearly empty. Of course this wastes time, wastes energy, and makes the water taste bad. But I'm sure it is done just to save a couple of steps. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846) History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. Martin Luther King If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions? Scott Adams

Boiling water does kill most of the bacteria in it. I'm not sure this practice of genocide against entire populations of organisms is considered ethical these days. We frown on these practices against humans, rain forests, sperm whales and the like. Bacteria are so small they seem insignificant in our minds but they do serve a useful purpose on this planet. Consider: if you kill these bacteria then your immune system has nothing to strengthen your defenses against leaving you weak and vulnerable to subsequent infestations. Also, the act of boiling destroys the bacteria most thoroughly leaving your water a soup of rended cell walls, partially disintegrated DNA and RNA chains, the trash of demolished cellular organelles and partially denatured protoplasm. Doesn't sound healthy to me. As one of the articles asked, would you buy a bottled water with these ingredients listed? Though that does raise the question of whether drinking a pint of such water would count as 1 protein unit on your diet plan. Edited by AZPaul3, : No reason given.

I can think of several candidates for this week's loony, some of them running for the office of President. But for now, let's just go with this ...

Isn't strep throat a uniformatist assumption? Maybe it's a fairy in the toe?

I've tried to avoid autobiographical posts, because inevitably they're questioned, because why not.
But I'm still mad as hell about this poor kid, so here goes. When I was 5 years old, my sisters were 7 and 9. We were constantly sick, as the strep infection moved through us like 220 through a 110 circuit, round and round, burning, burning... Penicillin was available--the local quack just didn't believe in it. One day, at last all nonfebrile, we occupied the same hospital room, tonsillectomies done at the bulk rate. My oldest sister, a bleeder, suffered third degree burns on her legs, because the electrocautery machine shorted out through the surgical table; the ether made me comatose for three days, though I awoke leaving the OR in convulsions, and broke the nurse's nose. The rheumatic fever cursed all three of us with autoimmune issues: a thyroid here, some heart valve damage there, as well as complaints of pain and fatigue that followed us all our lives. My sisters are dead, their lives reduced in length and almost every circumstance by those long-ago events. My (eventually summa) return to undergraduate school was interrupted by my first major autoimmune episode in my junior year, though I recovered and and followed a fellowship offer to Boston Univ. grad school. That clock kept ticking: I was forced to withdraw from grad school due to my health. When I experienced back, leg and neck injuries in a 2001 rear-ending, they were complicated by an exaggerated inflammatory response consistent with my history. I've had multiple surgeries: cervical spine, lumbar spine, both legs; bone grafts, titanium caging, steroids, opiates, fentanyl patches, an implanted neurostimulator to block nerve pain. I stopped opiate pain meds for the past 18 months, because they killed my sister. A shot of whisky and a toke, and I'll still laugh about life and spit in yer eye...but...so many possibilities lost, and all that work... And my beautiful sisters. All for the lack of a few injections, a little penicillin. Contemporary parents don't understand that they're playing with fire. We've forgotten far too much. Even the most often survived childhood diseases can have terrible consequences later. I think many of these parents play naturopathic games like they follow fashions, thinking real medicine has their backs and can step in, if needed. It doesn't work that way."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads." Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto.-Terence |
