I have doubts about the Galapagos finches being a good example of animal speciation, and so I am turning to you all to tell me what other examples there are. This thread is not to challenge the concept of speciation or its validity; I am looking for solid and vivid examples from the animal kingdom that can be used to exemplify this process to a skeptic.
I am also wondering if all the experiments with fruit flies produced a new species or a new genus (with all those many generations, and access to induced genetic mutation). ?

Speaking as one who is only passingly familiar with the topic, I would suggest moths. There are examples where environmental change has produced dramatic and relatively quick speciation. I've seen this covered on Discovery channel and it's not difficult to understand.

Speciation Examples
I am also wondering if all the experiments with fruit flies produced a new species or a new genus (with all those many generations, and access to induced genetic mutation). ?
The reference below has a bunch of speciation examples. This ranges from bacteria, some different plants, houseflies, fruitflies and worms.
It appears to be restricted to lab cases which are the most cut and dryed.

Berberry, if you are referring to Peppered Moths, then they are only an example of natural selection at work. No one to my knowledge has argued that the dark varieties are a different species. They have been observed among the lighter varieties since way back.
Unless you mean some other moth?

Re: Speciation Examples
Thanks NosyNed. Interesting stuff. I started another thread on what I've gathered.

I'm darn sure you are right about that Tamara.

Hello, Tamara.
Instances of observed specification abound. I will not respond to your question directly. Instead I suggest you go to scientific websites like nature.com and search for specification.
Seek and you will find.
