Second hand smoke is a known killer.
There are many known killers, but please provide the evidence for second hand smoke being a killer.
Also, would you not agree that fast food is a potential killer too?
Why should people that work in the service industry be subjected to peoples smoke?
We should be asking, why are people forced to work for low wages and poor benefits in the service industry. Smoking is the least of the working classes worries.
Smoking is not a right. Being able to marry the person you love is a right.
Please elaborate. How do you distinguish the 2. Both are man made products, created for specific purposes. Either they are both rights, or neither is a right.
Note, I don't mean being in love and living with the person you love, I mean the legal union itself.
Two men getting married does not infringe on me in any way. Having to eat next to people smoking infringes on my rights.
To what?
How are your rights violated?
Also, would you be ok with a smoking area in a resturant or could that be considered segregation?

Second hand smoke is off-topic...
... unless your are somehow tying it into what is on-topic.

It really helps moderators figure out if a topic is disintegrating because of general misbehavior versus someone in particular if the originally non-misbehaving members kept it that way. When everyone is prickly and argumentative and off-topic and personal then it's just too difficult to tell. We have neither infinite time to untie the Gordian knot, nor the wisdom of Solomon.
There used to be a comedian who presented his ideas for a better world, and one of them was to arm everyone on the highway with little rubber dart guns. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid, you fire a little dart at his car. When a state trooper sees someone driving down the highway with a bunch of darts all over his car he pulls him over for being an idiot.
Please make it easy to tell you apart from the idiots. Source

Vermont falls
In a first in the nation case, Vermont has legalized same-sex marriage through the legislative process (the others, as we all know, are thanks to court action).
Their house and senate overrode the veto.

So now you can get married if you are homosexual in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa.

That's impressive! I don't think such a thing can happen here in Texas, at least in my lifetime.

Good for Iowa.
Self-determination among the states, the way it is supposed to be.
And, I guess good for Vermont, though Vermont is always sort of an anolmoly, being the 1st independant nation to join the United States, they have always been independant and done things thier own way.

Again, I have to point out that there are 40 states with a constitutional ban on gay marriage and 13 that have a ban on anything remotely resemble gay marriage like civil union. This versus the 4 states that allow gay marriage.
Still got a long way to go... 40 constitutional amendments to overturn.

Thanks, Debbie Downer
You're right though. What has been more shocking to me has been the lack of gay marriage legalization in the more progressive states.
I live in Miami and we have a large gay community which for the most part has been kinda quiet during all of this.
I wish more states who have a large liberal constituency would move forward with adopting the same laws as Iowa and the others.
Then we can look forward to gay divorce, 'cause let's be honest, marriage blows. - (no pun intended)
