Re: the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine
A growing feature on Facebook are reports of pastors and others who denounce corona virus as a hoax and engage in packed gatherings ... who have now died of the virus.
Should their life insurance companies all refuse to pay on their policies because they had committed suicide?

Re: the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine
The difference is that the Episcopal church is turning the Cathedral of St John into a field hospital and the attendees will all be doctors, nurses, first responders and patients. Pews out and beds in.

White House was warned early
https://news.yahoo.com/...80111894--abc-news-topstories.html
quote:
As far back as late November, U.S. intelligence officials were warning that a contagion was sweeping through China’s Wuhan region, changing the patterns of life and business and posing a threat to the population, according to four sources briefed on the secret reporting.
Concerns about what is now known to be the novel coronavirus pandemic were detailed in a November intelligence report by the military's National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI), according to two officials familiar with the document’s contents.
The report was the result of analysis of wire and computer intercepts, coupled with satellite images. It raised alarms because an out-of-control disease would pose a serious threat to U.S. forces in Asia -- forces that depend on the NCMI’s work. And it paints a picture of an American government that could have ramped up mitigation and containment efforts far earlier to prepare for a crisis poised to come home.
"Analysts concluded it could be a cataclysmic event," one of the sources said of the NCMI’s report. "It was then briefed multiple times to" the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s Joint Staff and the White House.
That alone wouldn't be enough to kick off a major effort, but it is another in the chorus of experts the Administration ignored.

Im sure insurance companies will make that claim. If they do pay out, the money should go to hospitals as their actions directly worsened the situation for healthcare workers.

Re: John Oliver on OAN misinformation idiocy
Oh you poor Lefty you. The meanings that are "clear" to you are 99% NOT his meanings. Or in the case of the "China virus" they are commonly used terms UNTIL Trump uses them, at which point they become racist.
I will agree that calling it the China virus is not de facto racist. There was a previous disease causing an epidemic in the Middle Eastern region known as "MERS" an acronym for Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome. This term was basically created by epidemiologists. Are they "racist" against Middle Easterns or were they referencing the area that the disease is known to have originated?
I obviously agree that leftist's media is making a big deal about Trump's using the term "China Virus." That's really much ado about nothing from people who are incentivized to cast aspersions against him whenever possible.
Having said that, I'm not sure anyone else used the phrase prior to him. If you have any evidence of that then we can clearly say a bias exists.

The Christians who think that God will spare them from bad things because of their unshakable faith is clearly delusional. Go look at how Peter died. Go look at how Paul died and all the inflictions he endured. Oh, go look at how Jesus died.
There are plenty of Christians who die from cancer, heart disease, lung disease, plenty who die in car accidents, plenty who burn to death in fires, from falls, from gunshots, from stabbings, oh, and plenty from infectious diseases.
This notion that you should flout common sense and good judgment just because you believe in God is absurd. Jump off a fucking bridge right now if you're so convinced that your faith will save you. Or are you too much of a pussy?
What a prick.

The most lawless Administration by far
Grassley Requests Trump Provide Legitimate Reason For Firing Intelligence Watchdog
quote:
The senators pointed out that Trump was legally required to give the Senate and House Intelligence Committees his reasons in detail for firing an inspector general, and that the law mandates he do so 30 days in advance.
However, Trump only told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he no longer had the fullest confidence in Atkinson, and the inspector general had already been fired by then.
Congressional intent is clear that an expression of lost confidence, without further explanation, is not sufficient to fulfill the requirements of the statute, the senators wrote. This is in large part because Congress intended that inspectors general only be removed when there is clear evidence of wrongdoing or failure to perform the duties of the office, and not for reasons unrelated to their performance, to help preserve IG independence.

Re: The most lawless Administration by far
It's sad that the Senate with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presiding has already determined that the President does not have to explain anything to Congress beyond the fact that he thought the action was in the best interest of the nation.
Sorry Charlie, but you already surrendered and the coup is over and done with. Il Donaldo can do anything he feels is in the best interest of the nation including ignoring the US Constitution.

Well who knew that suspending critical thinking and replacing it with blind faith could be a bad thing.

It turns out that the virus in New York mainly came in from Europe, not China.

Winter cold or the virus?
California seems to have remarkably few cases for its size and people have been wondering why. The social distancing is a reason, but some have suggested there might be a herd immunity, that many had the virus and didn't know it. The only way that could be discovered is by testing for antibodies, which isn't being done in great enough numbers to find out.
But my daughter and I were remembering that everyone in her family had had a strange cold-like or flu-ish sickness starting around November, affecting them all to different degrees but with similar symptoms including headache, fever and a dry cough. Of course they thought it was just a winter cold and it may have been but in retrospect they are wondering. Members of another family they know had something similar. Two children my grandson sat with in class were sick a week before he got it.
It would be nice to know if the virus had already been through a large part of the population so they could come out of quarantine.

Economic collapse?
I'm getting worried about the economy. Is it possible to get back to anything like normal if this lockdown continues much longer? I know systems for returning to work area by area are being considered, which would be a good start. But it would help a lot if we could know how many have had the virus and recovered from it, which would be a better place to start it seems to me.
If we don't have a way to resume something like normal life fairly soon won't there be some scary economic consequences we may not be able to imagine from where we sit at the moment?. I'm thinking if I were twenty or thirty years younger I'd be starting a garden on whatever square of open ground I could find. In my case I'd have to put pots out on my balcony but anything is better than nothing.
There's no way I know of to grow toilet paper though.
