Re: 4 major carriers/networks
Folks over 55 can get senior plans with unlimited data for about 30 bucks from T-mobile. Not sure if that would allow Netflix streaming...

unlimited ... really?
Folks over 55 can get senior plans with unlimited data for about 30 bucks from T-mobile. Not sure if that would allow Netflix streaming ...
All 5 simple plans are "unlimited" -- they just have different thresholds for when the unlimited data is throttled down to 2G from 4G LTE. Only the top two have no threshold.
That is how most "unlimited" plans work - once you get behind the hype.
What T-Mobile says
quote:
Unlimited 55+
2 lines $60/mo.
For a generation of rule breakers.
55yr old+ get 2 lines with unlimited talk, text and LTE data on America’s best unlimited network for $60/mo. with AutoPay.
Call 1-800-T-MOBILE
On all T-Mobile plans, during congestion, the small fraction of customers using >50GB/mo. may notice reduced speeds until next bill cycle due to data prioritization. See full terms
That 50GB is one of the higher thresholds, and they don't say how much it is throttled. Their other plans mention Netflix and streaming video (DVD quality or higher) to other devices, including TV.
Also doesn't say anything about out of country calls -- the simple plan lets me call Canada and Mexico. Good for vacation calling.
Enjoy

Re: 4 major carriers/networks
Look carefully at the terms and conditions. It may well only allow delivery to one device (especially the unlimited plans). What you want is usually called tethering

Re: 4 major carriers/networks
The T-Mobile Old Fart plan is actually what I picked. It is a two line plan and not $30 per line. If you get just one line it is $55.00 IIRC. I have two lines, one for a phone and one for the watch. The watch connects to the phone using Bluetooth within about 50 feet or so. If I go out and forget my phone it will still forward calls to the watches phone number if I do not answer within 10 seconds. I can also get calls directly to the watch's phone number but only my close family has that number. Of course since the watch is a separate phone line I can make calls using it at anytime.

Yes. That T-mobile plan I mentioned does not include tethering although it does allow you to have a hotspot. I asked about tethering and decided I did not want to pay the extra dollars.

Yes, it is a two line plan. I share it with my wife, and it amounts to $30 a piece. I am not sure if there are any restrictions on who you share it with, and I believe on the primary person has to be over 55.

Yes. One person has to be 55 or over.

No contract, so I can quit anytime. I am also past contract with Verizon and can quit anytime.
My first phone in town was through Virgin Mobile and I had a second number for a portable hotspot that served up to 4 lines. I used that for internet. It was 3G. Big advantage was I could take it to job sites and use internet there.
Yes, the $60/mo plan also includes 8 GB hotspot data. That get's me to the laptop. How much is a half hour of video streaming in GB of data? Don't know how long that would last.
My old phone can mirror to a tv screen, the new one cannot. Have not checked wife's i-phone. The TV does wi-fi and bluetooth.
Following Jar's watch comments I wonder that the same could be done with TV.
But I think I'll have better success with a community wi-fi for the town for internet.
Enjoy

Let's distinguish between a hotspot and tethering. Hotspots are strictly wifi connections. Tethering can include hotspotting, but tethering also includes sharing your phone's internet connection over USB. That is probably what you need to use to share high-quality video. You might be able to do a lower quality video over a hotspot.
The cheapo plan I have includes hotspot but not tethering. I use it to connect to the internet using my tablets because they don't have cellular connections. I could get full tethering by paying more, and maybe that is an option if I was also trying to get rid of cable tv.
