Re: Second Question
I'd try using malwarebytes or other malware remover first. If you cannot get rid of things that way, the last measure before reinstalling everything from scratch is to try something called combofix. If you are already getting your browser hi-jacked it is just a matter of time before your computer will stop letting you run anything and won't let you access sites that allow you to clean up your computer. Stuff disappearing from your desktop is a really bad sign. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. NoNukes: check out AVanti. You might have to run it in XP compatibility mode, but it does much more than WinFF Yes, I have used that, but the last version I installed would not convert properly to Ipod/Ipad formats and I haven't used it for awhile. I'm still using XP right now. I plan to install Windows 7 this weekend. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Re: Second Question
Yeah, Malearebytes.org as above . Or Spybot Home - Spybot Anti-Malware and Antivirus : Spybot Anti-Malware and Antivirus. ComboFix Download ComboFix is worth running as well, I have used it many times and I have no idea what it does, but it does it extremely well. At the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free/Pro

Glad I could help. There's my good deed for the month. Organic life is nothing but a genetic mutation, an accident. Your lives are measured in years and decades. You wither and die. We are eternal, the pinnacle of evolution and existence. Before us, you are nothing. Your extinction is inevitable. We are the end of everything.

Re: Second Question
Use chrome and install adblock. If you are REALLY leery, NoScript as well, but that can be tedious, so it depends on just how ardent you want to be about privacy/safety. As the others have said, malwarebytes is one of the best. I suggest getting the paid version as that has active protection. The free version is on demand/manual scan only. If you have a legit copy of windows, Microsoft Security Essentials is good, lightweight and free. Those two should help all but the stupidest of users. If you are the type to click on large flashing banners that say "CLICK HERE FOR A MILLION DOLLARS", you deserve to have your computer hijacked. Stuff disappearing from your desktop is a really bad sign. No, that came first. What happened was that trying to fix my video problem I downloaded a codec package and played, which didn't fix the problem, but this stuff came with it, I think it's practically legitimate. But getting rid of the software didn't get rid of the adverts that pay for it. It's not getting worse, I have had some awful adware before, this stuff is positively benign. But annoying.

Codec packages can be dicey.

Re: Second Question
But getting rid of the software didn't get rid of the adverts that pay for it. Try an internet search for adware related to whatever you downloaded. But be careful. Sometimes the posts you find are from computer thugs who want to miss up your machine. Even benign malware steals cycles and if it's hi-jacking your browser, that's just plain evil IMO.
