Well...... It is because the old subject has arisen that I started dragging up old posts and then started this thread. That doesn't (necessarily) mean that the same argument has been raging all that time. Though I can see how one might come to that conclusion. And to be honest that is kinda the nature of EvC (or indeed any other primary issue debate forum). The same stuff does resurface time and time again. Even if new angles are found and individual positions taken. No harm in that per se.
Well this isn't intended to be part of that anyway.

My main question is...... Why such a reluctant poster now? We don't hear enough from you IMHO.

This is funny because it must be close to my first (1 day after registering) but I recall that I came in and answered some 1 or more year old post not the one shown. I came here, as I recall, following Rrhain from some site I forget completely. I'm still here but I've learned not to try to post a reply to everything. Especially Buz.

http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=msg&m=106825 In which Percy agreed with me, a great honor for a first post I guess. It was mostly downhill from there as I went through a bit of a learning curve. I came in here to debate about creation, because I was believing in what creationists were saying, taking on faith that they were conducting real science. I have found that not to be true. However, my faith has not waned, and I still believe. If anything, debating in this forum has increased my faith, and made me learn the bible a lot better than I would have on my own. The bible is not my source of faith, but confirms some things I feel inside. I've learned a lot about science along the way too. I've learned that faith is very subjective, and you cannot prove God. Actually you can't prove anything. It's brought about a sensitivity to what others feel about religion, and God, and soften my approach to people in that regard. I've learned that the only way to convey feelings about God is through love, and that's it. Like Ned, my posting has slowed down quite a bit, as you tend to get tired of debating with certain people who just don't understand you, and are just basically liars. I guess if I went back and read, I find quite a few posts that I might be embarrassed about today, but heh, wtf, no regrets, live and learn.

Life before EvC? Never. And you and Rrhain together? How long have you two been foruming together in total?
I think there is a lot to be learnt from this. I know that I am all too prone to attempting to try and answer every point in every post. A more "focussed" approach would probably serve me better but once I get going I just get carried away........
Because I am kinda bored (son asleep, wife in bed with a cold) and because I found the answers to my original "first post" question interesting I was wondering if people would be interested in taking up RAZD's suggestion of highlighting and commenting on their first topic proposal? As I mentioned to Oni in Re: My first post...embarrassing. (Message 16) my first topic was a very embarressing and overly assertive declaration against creation science as a logical concept Faith Science - Logically Indefensible. I am not proud of this one at all. But we live and learn. Which I guess is why we are here at all..... Edited by Straggler, : Fix link

Shameless self-promotion of my first topic? I jump at the chance! Morals without God or Darwin, just Empathy As I became more confident with my ongoing posting and involvement in the EvC world. It only took me a little over two years between my first post and my first topic. Gotta be some kind of record!! My first topic is still one of my favourite topics here... all about morals. Why we have them, where they come from, and does any of that actually matter now that we do have them. It helped me frame my thoughts and firm up my own confidence in having a moral system that did not rely on traditional writings or evolutionary heritage. It's a moral system that's completely made up And now I'm rambling. Time to submit.

Having seen the power of indoctrination (regarding the supposed benefits of smoking) to hold people in a vice-like grip at first hand, I'm still inclined to see some merit in the idea. Let's face it, the vast majority of people who firmly believe the ToE aren't at all equipped to evaluate the arguments/evidence for themselves. I see I posted 71 of the 310 messages before hitting the 300 post limit so I must have been having a ball of a time. Edited by iano, : No reason given.

My first seems to be Message 5 in a thread of Salty's. I don't think my style and approach have changed much, although I have certainly become less polite. TTFN, WK

2) Age Correlations and an Old Earth - The root of the ACaaOE dynasty! The ones you listed were numbers 4 and 5. For a small fee I'll find any forum old timer's first topic started. Moose

I started at the back of my index list and worked forward. Of course that is organized by your last post on a thread, so it's a bit of a search problem.
And the thread was posted 16MARCH2004, while I joined on 14MARCH2004. Enjoy. I agree I think I was more polite at the beginning as well (after debating 100+ creationists stating the same PRATs over and over and nutcases like Smooth Operator and the like, your patience starts to wear). I don't think my position has changed much though. First post about a year ago: Message 39 in 'What does ID theory say?' “One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves -- that we've been so credulous.” - Carl Sagan, The Fine Art of Baloney Detection "You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe." - Carl Sagan "It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World
