Quoting berberry from elsewhere:
quote:
Shouldn't there be a standard format for naming threads that are not merely spin-offs from other topics but are rather continuations of soon-to-be-closed threads? I think the title of your new thread should be "Part II: Women and Religion - Does It Anger You?" or something similar. This makes it clear at a glance that the thread is not a new discussion but a continuation of an existing one.
In the past topics have been closed once they get to or pass 300 messages. This was because topics that long tended to have technical problems resulting in damaged threads.
It has been pointed out by Percy (in the "Private Admin Forum"?) that these problems now longer exist because of various improvements in the operations of the system.
I'm still inclined to think that any topic that goes 300 messages is due (and probably long overdue) for a fresh topic for the current main theme of the discussion. I think that such long topics very much tend to be a jumbled up mess, especially if they are "peg the activity meter" type topics. Of course, a link back to the lead in topic would be a good thing.

Bump of sorts
AdminAsgara has just closed down the Women and Religion - Does it anger you? topic at 311 messages.
The technical problems that justified closing such long topics no longer exist. None the less, I think that circa 300 messages is still a good time to close a topic down. If there is some particular point needing coverage, it can be spun-off into a new topic.
Adminnemooseus
ps: There is still available that topic where members can request topics be reopened. The topic title has been changed from what I have in my "signature", but the link is still good.
Don't pay too much attention to the "start a new topic" info. It is only partly accurate. My "signature" needs a major overhaul.

WHERE TO GO TO START A NEW TOPIC (For other than "Welcome, Visitors!", "Suggestions and Questions", "Practice Makes Perfect", and "Short Subjects")
Comments on moderation procedures? - Go to
Change in Moderation?
or
too fast closure of threads

300+ message topic problems again
The Applying Science to Past Events topic has just imploded at 345 messages. I have closed it pending repairs.
I have also taken the precaution of closing the Big Bang...How Did it Happen? topic, which is currently at 414 messages.
Perhaps othe 300+ message topics should be closed.

added by edit - also closed:
PROOF against evolution
Points on abortion and the crutch of supporters
Please give me so-called "proof" of Jesus or God.

Bump for Percy/Admin etc.
I think we should again start closing all topics at ~300 messages. Not only might this prevent topic implosions, but I think 300 messages are flat out enough for any topic. If needed, sequel and/or spin-off topics can be started.

Yea, I guess so.
However, the reasons for this should be put under the guidelines page so that no one thinks any censorship is going on.

It's not really an issue there as much as an opportunity.
