Okay, number one: I am a Christian, and I'm also new to this forum. Okay. Anyway, on to the point:
My father is also a Christian, and he's fallen toward the lunatic fringe. He recieves emails every day that range from the wacky to the demented. (Examples: Pig meat is evil and can kill you, the Russians have forcefield technology and will kill us all, George Bush is communing with Satan, Milk is also evil and will kill you, and oil drillers recently tunneled into Hell.)
Who here believes this stuff? I sure don't, but I just wondered...
Oh, and another semi-related thing: Would forcefield technology be possible? I say no, because it would be nearly impossible to direct most forms of energy into a plane, curving or otherwise.

Sounds to me like the conspiracy subculture rather than religion, strictly speaking.
Thre only rational explanation I could offer for the popularity of the genre is a deep-seated sense that society is in some form a lie. I can make an argument that it is, and that this sort of behaviour is a subconscious response to uncertainty. But thats about as far as it goes.

Yeah, but-
The one about Russian forcefields always gets me though. They mentioned stuff about Tesla carbines and junk, but I just laughed it off.
Might there be a grain of truth to it? I know tasers can sometimes project electricity...

Moon Landings and Creationists
I have often noticed a shared mentality between the lunatic fringe and creationists. A recent special on the Moon Landing Conspiracy had my jaw bouncing off the floor. Not because of the stupidity of the conspiracists who claim the moon landings were faked, but by the similarity between moon landing conspiracy theorists (Moonies for short) and creationists. In the TV program they ripped up the Moonies evidence one by one, but the Moonies had an ad hoc rationalization for every rebuttal. The best was when they demonstrated how the laser refelcting prisms on the moon worked, an experiment left on the moon by one of the Apollo missions. They couldn't get one Moonie to answer any questions about the laser light that reflected off of the moon. This was so similar to topics on this site that are ignored by creationists as if it were the plague (numerous threads on ERV's for instance).
Man has, and probably always will, put wishful thinking ahead of rational thought.

Yes, I believe this. Why do you think I've been eating pork lately? Trying to kill myself, that's why.
he Russians have forcefield technology and will kill us all
Oh come now, we all know this is a fact. They were smart enough to send sputnik into space before we could send anything into orbit. I'm pretty sure they are centuries ahead of us in military technology.
George Bush is communing with Satan
What's there to talk about? The man is obviously communing with the devil. It's obvious.
Milk is also evil and will kill you
This is definitely true, also. Everytime I tried to drink milk in the past, my whole life flashed before my eyes. That and incredible pain the entire day. They tell me it's because of my lactose intolerance, but I knew better. Milk will kill you!
oil drillers recently tunneled into Hell
Now, this is the only thing that isn't completely true. It wasn't recent by a long shot. It happened in 1984. I would hardly call that "recently".

Re: Moon Landings and Creationists
I think that in other cases, conspiracy theorists and creationists "believe" for the same reason: They want to understand and control a world of apparent disorder.

About those oildrillers....
I used to work cash at a grocery store and on very boring evenings we found something to amuse ourselves - made fun of the tabloids. There is this one that's printed in black and white (totally can't remember the name). I've seen Satan burst out of hell, appear in the sky over the vatican, and several other key religious spots. If it wasn't the same picture (used loosely) that they used EVERYTIME maybe they would have succeeded in convincing someone of it.... or maybe not. It's the same tabloid that runs all those stories about Batboy. Some people will always be gullible enough to believe whatever they hear, but hey, it keeps the tabloids in print!

If one opts for belief in revelation, reason can no longer declare that such belief is untenable. If on the other hand, one opts for disbelief, there is nothing reason can do to prove the validity of revelation.

That's the Weekly world News!
...which is, IMHO, a work of art.

ROFL, I totally agree.
My mother use to buy the tabloids that told her who was sleeping with whom. I bought the ones that told me what was sleeping with what.

: Pig meat is evil and can kill you
He might refer to the toxins in pigs. Or the fat, hence the "sweet savour". In the Old Testament, they were advised not to eat blood, or fat. There are many proves that what God says was correct before science. He knew to wash and all about quarantine. He shows that he knew all things before man's arrogance.

...yeah, and that stuff about the moon being a source of light, and there being a "firmament" that the stars are "set into", and the cure for leprosy which involves sprinkling or wiping bird and lamb's blood on the afflicted, that ostriches are cruel and inattentive parents (that was a new one I just found), that mental illness is really demonic posession, that believers can drink poison and be unaffected, God's anger causes earthquakes and other natural disasters, that rabbits chew their cud, that insects have 4 legs, that bats are birds, and that dragons, unicorns, ans satyrs actually exist have sure been signs that the Bible is an excellent sourse of accurate knowledge about nature.

Let's keep religion out of this topic
It's a Coffee House topic. It started out non-religion oriented. Let's keep it that way.

And of course there are also verses about cross-pollination that describe how God told the Israelites how to correctly plant crops.
quote:
Something like: And if the seed from the wheat should fall upon the squash, and likewise the squash will taste as wheat.
In any case, there are more unexplainable CORRECT things found in the Bible than there are falsehoods (Most of which are really from the knowledge of the time and credited to the Bible because it is iconic of that era. The Bible, to my knowledge, never said squat about how to correctly heal leprosy or about unicorns and stuff.)
...And I also agree with Mr. Moderator Person. Let's end this Bible discussion and get back to the nutballs who wil believe anything. I just had to get my 2 cents in first.
