quote: Somone else mentioned Noam Chomsky, he would be a good choice. How about Ralph Neas from People for the American Way? Or Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women, or Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation? There's also Barry Lynn, director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. How often do we ever see anyone from Organized labor? Or from human rights organizations? C'mon, you don't think Paul Begala and James Carville represent liberal viewpoints?

I have an idea. I'm not sure what a "liberal" is, either. I subscribe to the American weekly magazine The Nation; they claim to be liberal, and I use this magazine to judge what is liberal and what is not. Why don't you start reading The Nation? Then compare what you read in those articles with the articles in The New York Times and CNN and whatever else interests you, and see if you can see the same analyses, ideas, and opinions promoted in a consistent fashion.

Ok, maybe I will, and you might check out these "conservative" sources Washington Post and National Review. BTW, am I the only conservative on this board?

No, I consider myself a conservative, but also that 99.999999999% of those who today consider themselves to be conservatives as little more than fascists.

ooh.. fascism is harsh. That's like saying 99.999999999% of liberals are communists.
Fascism and communism are opposite far extremes. IMO most folks fall somewhere in between.

Yup. Sure is harsh. But I believe today's conservatives have truly lost their way and gone much too far to the right.

Liberal's aren't communists? I thought they both liked to redistribute wealth from the producers to the non-producers?
Hmmm.. Conservative here. My short definition of a conservative:Low Taxes Smaller Goverment Not starving a handicapped citizen to death Doesn't give a hoot about giving dolphins feeding tubes to keep them alive Don't like excessive gun laws Pro life (anti abortion) Pro death penalty (if you kill somebody we'll kill you back) Freedom of Religion *EDIT* Almost forgot, we like to kick the terrorists collective ass where we find them Small defition of liberal:Big Goverment (they like it when citizens depend on them...gives them power) High Taxes Like to starve handicapped citizens to death Zealous outpouring of love and emotion over dolphins that need feeding tubes to stay alive. Doesn't want anyone to have a gun (of course the bad guys will have them) Pro Abortion (Lets kill the innocent) Anti Death Penalty (Lets cut the guilty some slack) Remove religion from pretty much everything *EDIT* Terrorists...lets try and understand them (and please DON'T OFFEND their religion *although we'll offend christains as we damn well please on US soil*) This message has been edited by Tal, 04-14-2005 01:15 PM Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? People, let's try to keep things focused on what the news media is doing.
Tal - Would you be interested in bringing your conservative/liberal opinions to a new topic. I would suggest a calmer behavior. Adminnemooseus New Members should start HERE to get an understanding of what makes great posts.

I actually think CNN does a good job of putting out "objective" (not left or right leaning) news. The only show that had people touting the party line was "Crossfire" and that is off the air. I even respect their conservatives for being intellectually honest. For instance, Lou Dobbs immediately came out against the Social Security Reform and the bankrupt Budget proposal. For a rundown of their primetime pundits or anchors:
Judy Woodruff- probably liberal but doesn't really commentate. Lou Dobbs-Conservative, but not a neocon and doesn't spit out the latest talking points Wolf Blitzer- more straight news than commentary Aaron Brown- Same as above, seems liberal though. Larry King- idiot, but not political Usually when issues are discussed they have most views represented. I do understand the sentiment that what most people (not those here) would consider extreme liberals aren't represented, but I think that's more indicative of the political atmosphere of the country than anything else. The majority of the people I know don't even know who Noam Chomsky, and probably wouldn't agree with most of what he says. Is the viewpoint, i.e. extreme liberalism, so widespread that it should always be included in a news programs geared towards a national audience? I really don't know, if anyone has figures I'd like to see them.

Also compare CNN's programs with Fox's.
Vestor- idiot Conservative hack Gibson- Conservative Hack Cavuto- Conservative Hack O'Reilly- Conservative Hack
Hannity and Colmes- Ultra Conservative Hack Programming. Frequent guests include Micheal Reagan and Oliver North. Greta- not political This is what I would consider a conservative station. CNN doesn't even come close to matching up with this circus. This message has been edited by JustinC, 04-14-2005 02:22 PM

quote: Don't confuse political hacks who flamboyantly cheerlead for the Democratic party as being representative of a liberal viewpoint. The Democrats as a party haven't had much in the way of a liberal viewpoint for a while now. They are more like Nixon-era republicans.

quote: But the extreme right wing views often are. I have seen Jerry Fallwell on CNN more than once.
quote: ...and where do most people in the country get their political news from? Where do they hear ideas being batted around? It's a feedback loop.
quote: Everybody I know knows who Fallwell is, and disagrees with everything he says, but he still gets on TV news, and fairly frequently, and is treated like he isn't a crazy religious extremist. Why don't they know who Chomsky is, and the fact that they probably wouldn't agree with him is the perfect reason to put him on the TV, and often. ...that is, if TV journalism is supposed to have any sort of responsibility to the public to present many viewpoints and spurring thought, discussion, and debate of the issues facing our world and isn't simply in the business of maintaining the status quo, not offending those in power, and making money for their stock holders.
