I assume that members of this forum, like myself, wish to remain anonymous. Can someone advise me what the position is regarding copyright. Are postings protected by copyright law or does the law not cover material published on the internet?

Whilst IANAL and YMMV, the simple answer is that copyright certainly does apply to postings on the internet. It might be difficult to do much about infringements, but it is not impossible. Another website I frequented had this problem, and after consulting relevant legal people, came to the conclusion that the posts made by the users were the isers' intellectual property.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. As far as copyright, if you check out the bottom of the page, EvCforum is copyrighted. Admin/Percy owns the forum.
Are you asking about quoting other members elsewhere? As far as anonymity, if you don't post personal information, no one can get it. Let's get the boss in on this one. AdminAsgara Queen of the Universe Comments on moderation procedures (or wish to respond to admin messages)? - Go to:

Not sure what it is you're asking, but the material her is copyrighted. If you look at the bottom of each page you'll see "© Copyright 2001-2006 by EvC Forum, All Rights Reserved"
What material is available out on the internet is usually copyrighted. Often "Fair Use" is allowed, meaning small portions of it may be used as long as attribution is given, but images are almost always copyrighted. Even when images and other materials are not copyrighted or use is allowed, it is generally not polite to directly link to them, that uses the other persons bandwidth. Instead, it is customary for you to host images or other bandwidth intensive materials so that you pay for the bandwidth used. I'm thinking that I might eventually incorporate some of my OWN postings into a book dealing with many of the questions raised on your Forum. In other words I wouldn't want someone else to borrow from my postings (Not that anyone necessarily would!!). On the other hand I might surprise myself and come up with one or two thoughts worth expanding into an essay or whatever. If I cannot protect my expressed thoughts on the Internet, then I might be more careful about what I post. Thanks for your input.

Thanks to you all for your replies. On reflection, my concern is of small importance. Any lengthy posting will have my original file time and date. I don't know how my name and any postings appeared on Google, but I'm flattered that anyone should bother. My main interest will be the effort to articulated my thoughts and consider replies I might receive. I doubt if many lives will be altered by your Forum, but any prompting to encourage individual thinking can never, one hopes, be wasted.

Because EvC Forum is the "publisher" and asserts full copyright protection, from a technical standpoint even a message's author must obtain permission to publish their own messages. However, the chances of a situation arising where EvC Forum would feel the need to assert its copyright seems very tiny, and the legal lines can sometimes be very blurry anyway. For example, what does copyright say about identical material that the same author posts to multiple copyrighted forums? Got me!
One thing I can say for sure: anyone who makes a lot of money (it would have to be millions to make it worthwhile) drawing in some way upon material published by EvC Forum will be hearing from my lawyers. I hope John Clancy has something in the works. More realistically, if in your own published creative effort you draw upon material published by EvC Forum, even your own, a note that it originally appeared at EvC Forum would be appreciated.

Thanks Percy. My mind is at rest on the subject. I will certainly give credit where due in the unlikely event I do not have to resort to vanity publishing inorder to be read.
Incidentally, someone tried to scan my computer yesterday but thankfully didn't get past my security. The EvC Forum was mentioned in the report. I complained to the website where the scan originated from and they will investigate. Someone may suspect that I am guilty of abuse. Oh, WOW!

There is no system of registration for copyright protection in Ireland as copyright arises automatically on the creation of an original work. You do not need to publish your work, to put a copyright notice on it or do anything else to be covered by copyright - protection is free and automatic. A work is protected automatically from the time it is first written down or recorded in some way, provided that it has resulted from the creator's skill and effort and is not simply copied from another work. Depending on the circumstances, it may be difficult for an author to prove that he or she had created a work at a specific point in time. Proof of this fact might be needed in an action for infringement. An author can create such proof by sending a copy of the work to himself or herself by registered post, keeping the post office receipt and leaving the envelope unopened. Another way of creating this type of proof is to deposit the work with an organisation such as the Copyright Protection Agency, which, for a fee, will provide the necessary proof should the need arise. http://www.cai.ie/faq/index.htm I'm sure the same info is available w.r.t. We have to have a casual familiarity with copyright, trademark and patent law where I work, and this description of copyright in Ireland sounds pretty much the same as it is here in the states.

Do not reply here. Moved to Message 1 Hello. I hope my query qualifies as a quick question, but if not, no worries. My question deals with determining the distance and age of light being emitted from other stars or galaxies. I think (hope) I understand the basics of the Doppler effect, and how we discern whether a galaxy is moving away from or toward our galaxy, i.e. the red shift and blue shift. But how do we determine the distance? This excerpt is from Hawking's "The Universe in a Nutshell".
In 1923, Hubble discovered that faint patches of light, called nebulae, were in fact other galaxies, vast collections of stars like our sun but at a greater distance. In order for them to appear so small and faint, the distances had to be so great that light from them would have taken millions or even billions of years to reach us. This indicated that the beginning of the universe couldn't have been just a few thousand years ago. So small and faint? I understand that this book is for the laymen, me, and doesn't go into too great of detail, but I was hoping some from this forum could help satiate my curiosity, Cavediver, maybe, or anyone else knowledgeable in astronomy or cosmology. Thank you, kindly. This message has been edited by AdminJar, 04-25-2006 10:02 AM

Actually a very good question and one that deserves a thread. Moving it to Dates and Dating.

And I've got a pile of EvC musings in registered letter form in a lead lined box in the back garden - just waiting for a publisher to knock at my door. So don't bugger around with me Percy. Cut n paste with caution!
