Never having tried to homeschool a child, I can't comment from that perspective. However, I have known a great many teachers-- my sister is one-- both in High School and after, and I must conclude that home schooling can't possibly be worse that the travesty that passes for education in this country.

For the most part, I do. But there are always exceptions. I will say that parents ought to have the right to educate their children. I should also say that I don't think the teachers in my high school were smart enough to teach kids to spit.

Although I think just about any parent should be able to teach their children the basics in math, science and history, language.
Looking at the surveys that are periodically done to get a bead on the general education of people in this country makes one wonder.

The mentor/apprentice thing I guess is more in the choosing of work, after or during their education young adults can begin to apprentice for whatever type of work they think they would like to do.
Reasonable enough. Some High Schools have some focused course plans. I think this is similar to the way the Gymnasium in Germany was a hundred years ago.

I wonder at the necessity of this though it would seem to me that on the job training is much more useful. Even in todays system no-one wants to hire someone straight out of university.
Depends on the job.

So I just suggest parents hone their childs ability to think and reason
Ah... but you are asking a lot.

Yeah, I can't argue with much of what you say. It is a tough call. True concern matters a lot, but so does a true mastery of the subject.

The students of the public education system, bar a few localized events, are basically being indoctrinated into the cult of the standardized test.
Yikes...
That just about sums up the US educational system. Very sad....

can you prove banning firearms or imposing laws on them would vastly decrease the number of firearm related crimes?
As I see it, the relevant statistic is the number of violent crimes per capita, not the number of gun related crimes. Assume a country, X, with a 25% homicide rate. Of that 25%, 20% are gun related. Take another country, Y, which also has a 25% homicide rate, of which only 5% is gun related. You can argue that Y's gun related crime is four times less than X's, but the comparison is a bit meaningless since the overall crime rates are the same.

LOL john you are so right and many statistics mongers are guilty of exactly that.
I used to have a book titled "How to Lie with Statistics." Very useful...
