what a party pooper...
Why have a belief or disbelief in something that I don't know nearly enough about to make a decision one way or the other?
To participate in a thread and let other people know how skeptical you are.
The english language is inadequate for me to express my answer in a single word answer. All I can say is I neither believe nor disbelieve "X".
Perhaps that says more about your abilities than the language. OK, so you don't know if aliens have visited us or not, but what do you think? Do you think they might have or are you just thinking 'know way'?
I guess what I'm trying to say in too many words is in the end our belief or disbelief in the things the OP presented means absolutely squat.
It can reveal your character, how skeptical you are. Its more than squat, you'd be sharing yourself. Don't boil it down, just reveal yourself. How skeptical are you?
Again, why have a belief or disbelief in something you know almost zip about? Sure, I've seen plenty of tv programs on the bermuda triangle and all the other weird stuff. Heck, I've even seen the fox program on the fake moon landing conspiracy theory thing. Doesn't mean I can speak authoritatively on the subjects.
Well it sounds like you know more than zip about it. Did you find the programs convincing? Do you have any opinion whatsoever?
I just saw this as a kind of fun thread to find out more about each other. We don't always have to try and solve the mysteries of the world or turn everything into a philosophical or logical argument.

Re: Answering questions

I recall reading somewhere that many of these "wrecks" did not actually occur in the Triangle. Many were simply vessels that passed through the area and then disappeared elsewhere...some as far a way as the Great Lakes. Yet these "disappearances" where attributed to the Triangle.
I can't recall the source though. Anyone else hear this, or am I just a wee bit nuts?
No, you're correct.

Re: what a party pooper...
Well, I don't think we're thinking of the same thing when we say "skeptical". When I refer to myself as a skeptic, it means I reserve judgement until... idunno probably never. It means I don't lean toward either way.
But I'll tell you this much about myself. I'd really love the idea of ET's coming down to earth and giving some of us anal probings... something about it that's just attractive and unattractive at the same time

evo/science geek/agnostic here.

Do you believe Earth is now, or ever has been visited by life from other planets?
Visited by Little Green Men flying foo fighters? No.
Life originated on earth via some sort of panspermia? Possible.
quote:
Do you believe that there was a conspiracy to assassinate JFK, RFK, or MLK? If yes, please specify which one(s).
Depends on what you mean by "conspiracy." I think it's possible that there was mob involvement in JFK's assassination, but I doubt there were large-scale conspiracies involving government agencies (ours or any other). I don't think that many people could keep such a big secret...
quote:
Do you believe that Franklin Roosevelt knew that Pearl Harbor was going to be attacked, but kept the information secret in order to get the U.S. into WWII?
I don't, but again I suppose it's in the realm of remote possibility.

Are there supernatural forces working in the Bermuda Tiangle?
No, just oceanographic and atmospheric forces.
No ghosts, ESP, or telekinesis either.

If the question is "Do you believe X exists/is true?" Then, given that you know what X is, the only possible answers are "Yes" or "No".
However, responding "No" is not the same as as saying "I believe X does not exist/is not true."
Sort of like how saying that "X > 0" is false does not mean you're saying "X < 0" is true. You're also allowing for the possibility of "X = 0" being true (which is not covered by either "X > 0" or "X < 0").
As a skeptic, if someone asks me "Do you believe in X?", then an insufficient amount of evidence for or against X will lead me to answer "No", every time. Had the question been "Do you know if X is true?" it'd be "No" as well... but it's important to note that they're different questions, and can have different answers with the same respondant.

I'm well aware of that. However, as I mentioned in my second post in this thread, the english language is insufficient for me to simply say "no" and not give out the impression that I believe x does not exist. This is why I hesitate everytime I am asked a question like this. Of course, if we are in a more formal setting, then yes I would have said no. But in a common setting, a yes always means x does exist and a no means x does not exist.
Just being cautious with how I communicate, that's all.

I don't think its the language so much as its people's misunderstanding of the language.
If asked "Do you believe aliens have visited us?"
and you reply 'no'.
That doesn't not mean that you believe that aliens have not visited us, although people might misinterpret your response to include that. Its not a fault in the language, its just people being dumb.
Just being cautious with how I communicate, that's all.
Yeah, I'm not caustious enough! I throw all kinds of crap out there and get dumb responses to it. But in a thread like this, its no big deal really. You're just being a party pooper by being too cautious.
