I am sure that this will work in a mod_perl environment and the "undef" is not necessary. When you declare the variable with the "my" the variable is reinitialized.
You could be right, my memory might have faded. I can't remember now if I did the test runs with mod-perl before or after the "use strict" conversion - in other words, in the "old days" there was very little use of "my". Mod-perl might be less of a problem now.
However, I still suspect something is up with the server. Whatever is stealing the cycles is hidden. When posting a message, the search database, which is in a file, gets tied to a variable while it's updated, and the untie sometimes is quick, and sometimes takes 10-20 seconds. It's beyond my expertise to diagnose this any further.

I formatted my harddrive last night.
Drastic solution. Let me make sure that that's really what you did. You backed up your hard drive, then rebooted from your system CD, reformatted your hard drive, then reinstalled the operating system from the system CD, then restored your data from backup, then reinstalled all the little miscellaneous programs and utilities that most people like, like messenger programs, iTunes, etc. Is that roughly correct?
The only place online I visited since then is EvC. Still getting popups.
Even before you logged in?
I know the popup people are very clever, so I won't speculate how they're doing this, but the popups aren't coming from EvC Forum. ISP's can sometimes be a source of popups.

Re: Searching
EvC Forum's search facility is a victim of age and success. This is because as more and more messages accumulate, the search database for each forum becomes larger and larger. At a certain point it becomes too big to update before the webserver process times out. This causes corruption of various system files (like yesterday morning), and sometimes even crashes the server (again, like yesterday morning).
The fix is to delete the search database for the problem forum. The database again begins accumulating search data, but only for new messages. The deletion has to be done periodically for all the popular forums, so usually there isn't more than a year or two of searchdata available.
dBoard 3.0, hopefully to be released at the end of this year, fixes this problem by moving the search database (and all the messages, too) into MySQL.

Re: Return of the Phoenix?
While a check against existing aliases is performed for newly registered names, the check was missing for new aliases for existing accounts, and your request for the Nemesis_Juggernaut alias was granted in error. I fixed the bug and gave the alias back to NJ.

Re: Password retrieval problems for linked accounts members
Yes, this is a bug, but I'm incredibly busy this weekend, have to work pretty much all the way through. I'll just send Randman his password manually.
