Actually, the difference is nephesh chayah and nephesh chayim. Both of which imply god breathing life into the creature. Save the later, which is used in reference to men in the bible, the former being animal, is plural. That means he breathed "lives" into man. This is very important as non-human animals are never mentioned as having ruach, which is the vital spiritual breath. So essentially when the bible states god made man in his own image and breathed life into him, he breathed not just life but a secondary essence, the ruach. He also breathed life into the animals as well as shown by the use of nephesh in reference to animals.
A moot point for me as as I do not think the bible is worth the paper it is written on. But the distinction, I would imagine, should be of vital importance for you and worth knowing.
