L. Chafee: "Against the Tide: How a Compliant Cong. Empowered a Reckless President"
I have some interesting listening, but it doesn't belong in the Science Programs on Radio, TV and Internet. Thus I'm starting this new topic.
-----
One-term Senator Lincoln Chafee was a moderate republican senator from Rhode Island. Amongst other things, he was the only republican to vote against the Iraq war resolution. He also voted against the GWB tax cuts (as did John McCain!).
He's written the book Against the Tide: How a Compliant Congress Empowered a Reckless President
From Online Bookstore: Books, NOOK ebooks, Music, Movies & Toys | Barnes & Noble®:
quote:
AGAINST THE TIDE is a smart, candid and surprising political memoir by Senator Lincoln Chafee -- an original look at the Bush Administration from the vantage point of one of the few Republican "moderates" in the Senate
Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) served in the United States Senate at a time when his Republican Party drifted so far right it no longer stood for its mainstream principles. In the face of his party's wrongheaded direction under George W. Bush, Lincoln Chafee became, even more fiercely, what he had always been...his own leader.
Chafee’s ideological positions make his voting record among the most liberal of the Republicans in the Senate. And it's no surprise that he has an eye-opening story to tell about his 7-year journey in national politics, from small-town mayor to a unique national voice.
AGAINST THE TIDE is an unabashedly frank political memoir and a forward-looking assessment of what comes next for the Republican and Democratic parties. More importantly it is a book for every American who cares about understanding where we've been under George W. Bush and where we're going in 2008 and beyond.
Lincoln Chafee was on tonights NPR "Fresh Air" program. Audio can be found at A Primary View from the Pennsylvania Press Box : NPR. The headline and lead story is something else; Chafee's part starts at 26:15.
For a short time (~24 hours) there is also a MP3 feed available at http://podcastdownload.npr.org/.../89745280/npr_89745280.mp3. Once again, the Chafee part starts at 26:15.

Materialism on "In Our Time"
Hi folks,
The "In Our Time" programme on Radio 4 (UK) is talking about the subject of materialism, one that has come up in discussion a few times recently.
It's on air as I type, for the next 40 mins, but can be found at the link below for the next week.
BBC Radio 4 - In Our Time
Enjoy.

Stanford Podcast on the subject of the Historical Jesus
Grizz posted this at the Reconstructing the Historical Jesus topic, which is a good place for it. I thought this topic would also be a good place for it (besides, it gives the topic a bump ).
Grizz writes:
Just an FYI for iPod owners with an interest in this subject:
itunes U has an excellant podcast on the subject of the Historical Jesus. The podcasts can be found under the Stanford University listings in the Arts and Humanities division. So far, there are ten lectures of about one-hour length.
Apparently iPod users have a good way to get there. Myself, I haven't a clue. Is there a link to this material for the non-iPod people?
