Re: Yes it makes a sound.
Ok, thats what I thought. If the cymbol was in atmosphere, the atmosphere would absorb the wave, and then the wave could leave the cymbol. Heat radiates off of it, how interesting. Ever hear of an ion drive? Lets design a cybmol drive.

Cymbal Drive: First draft
I know it looks a bit rough, but the 1:1 scale model I'm working on out back will be much better.
As you can see, Carey's drumming will be at the heart of this engine. The sound produced by his beats will continue to vibrate through the concrete layer, until it's eventually radiated into the vacuum as thermal energy. Once in the vacuum, the heat is focused to rear of the craft by a layer of aerogel, which is held in place by magnets. The radiation will escape through an opening, and Newton's third law will do its thing, propelling the craft to unprecedented speeds. Any design recommendations? Overall, I'm very optimistic about this project. Buyers in both the United States and EU have expressed interest. The only hard part will be getting Daniel Carey on board. But hey, that's what chloroform's for, right?

Re: Cymbal Drive: First draft
d00d!! That is awesome. I finally got a good laugh here on EVC, thank you for that. My recomendation would be to specify opposing magnets, and to enlarge the opening to full length of that side since velocity is not a factor, heat will radiate at the same speed, but if it bounces back into the craft instead of going out, we could lose effciency. We also need some sort of reflective surface on the remain 3 sides, to better radiate the heat in the right direction. If we use the gravity from some local planets, we could gain intial speed, then the cymbol drive can take over and eventually propel us to the speed of heat.

It may have played out. I don't see an urgent need to close it at this time. It can simply be allowed to drop into the background of inactive threads.

The only hard part will be getting Daniel Carey on board. But hey, that's what chloroform's for, right? if you're really in a pinch, josh freese will probably do it for a bean burrito and a little male-bonding, if you know what i mean. and if you can't provide that, the cost of a pay-phone call home for a ride will probably work. edit: of course, it won't go as fast, and it'll sound kinda gay. but it might be good for a prototype. Yes and no....?
If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? Ah, a question with no verifiable answer, not to mention somewhat of a proverb. Well, if soundwaves are all that is required to make a sound, then, yes it does make a sound. But if hearing devices, such as ears, are not around to hear the sound, is it still a sound? Sound is a meaningless concept without the reciprocal factor of something capable of hearing the sound in the first place. Light is also a meaningless concept unless there is something utilize the light. So in that way, the answer would be no, it does not. “I know where I am and who I am. I'm on the brink of disillusionment, on the eve of bitter sweet. I'm perpetually one step away from either collapse or rebirth. I am exactly where I need to be. Either way I go towards rebirth, for a total collapse often brings a rebirth." -Andrew Jaramillo

ok firstly you need to define what you mean by a tree.. all things biologicaly classed a trees ? , do man made plastic trees count ... then define your forest ... soil type , undergroth density , camp sites , does a kelp forest count.. then the forests location , in hill top , in a deep sided valley .. the define what you mean by a sound .. wavelenght , pitch , loudness then define the term fall , under noraml earth gravity , from what high , could the tree reach terminal velocity , how the tree falls .. ie from a natural standing stance , of falling off a log , or truck , or crane .. once all perameters are agreed we can start to run sonme tests ...
