EvC Forum will be going down tomorrow, February 16, 2009, at 8 AM Eastern Time so that the website can be moved to a new server.
I estimate down time should be about 2 hours. You can begin checking if it is back up around 10 AM. When the site comes back up, use this temporary link for access:
You will need to use that link (which has an IP address in place of ) for a day or two because it takes the change-of-address for the new server from 24 to 48 hours to catch up.

I forget if I've already mentioned this, but the old server was a very old 1.2 GHz Pentium 4 running Fedora 1.0. The new server is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core (dual cpus) running Centos 4.7. I'm hopeful that it will prove to be more robust and reliable. For web hosting software I'm now running Plesk instead of Ensim, still feeling my way around.
The name server update hasn't propagated to my ISP yet, but I'm glad to hear that at least one person seems to have it already.

It's running an open-source version of Redhat Linux called Centos 4.7.
I don't have any evidence that email is working yet. I set my account to receive email notifications and I'm not getting any, but this could be due to the gradual propagation of the name server information. If anyone receives an actual email notification please let me know, it would help confirm one more thing that is working.

Evidently the name server update has propagated to my webserver but not to my local ISP, so my notifications got sent here instead of to the old server.
This means I won't be reading email until the name server update propagates to my local ISP.

Whoops! Still understanding Plesk's control panel, timestamps should now be correct.

http://< !--UB EvC Forum: Percy is a Deist - Now what's the difference between a deist and an atheist? -->http://EvC Forum: Percy is a Deist - Now what's the difference between a deist and an atheist? -->EvC Forum: Percy is a Deist - Now what's the difference between a deist and an atheist?< !--UE--> writing a reply on the Percy=Deist thread, I used Message 4 and then clicked on it in preview so that I could copy and quote. I'm unable to duplicate this. Here's what I did, tell me how to modify it: I clicked on the "reply" button for message one, entered [msg=-4] into the message box, clicked on preview, then clicked on the "Message 4" link in the preview box, and it was fine. About tiff files, I think that's outside my control. According to the Wikipedia article on Image file formats, "The TIFF image format is not widely supported by web browsers."
How is your email? I'm wondering where I am with the site space and all the pictures and articles there. Coincidentally, I was intending to send you an inquiry about this sometime this week. I'm gradually moving websites and subdomains over from the old server, and I need to know if you want your EvC Forum subdomain moved over. You mention my email - did you send me email? If so, I haven't received any, so let me know when you sent it. Edited by Admin, : Change author.

There's one change I've been holding off on, and it may address your problem. Since it's been 48 hours I'm going to make this change now. Let me know if the problem goes away. You may still experience the problem one more time, but hopefully not after that.
Another possible cause of the problem is that some browsers actually cache the domain-name/IP mapping, which speeds things up since they can skip the name mapping step after the first access, but which means they could miss changes in the mapping, which is exactly what happens when a site changes to a new IP address. So you might try shutting down your browser and starting it up again. With IE, which is tightly integrated to the OS, you may have to logoff/logon, or evnr reboot.

I don't know what would cause this. You ask if it's fixed now, but I've done nothing, so if it is actually broken then it should still be broken. Let me know if it continues and we'll see if we can get a handle on it.

Taz writes: I seem to remember you talking about this fasty searchy thingy for at least a couple years now. Ah, yes, it's a sad tale. Back in 2004 I was making rapid progress, then my company reorganized, my job changed, and I lost all my free time. Progress on the discussion board software slowed to a crawl. But we're getting close! I expect dBoard 3.0 to be released before the end of the year, and hopefully much sooner. Some email problems have been brought to my attention. Are people still getting notifications?

A favicon.ico somehow snuck into the HTML directory, I have no idea what it's supposed to be. I removed it, but most browsers cache it, so you'll likely see it until the next time you log off.
AbE: I just took a close look at it using GIMP and I still have no idea what it is. AbE: If anyone knows of a nifty icon for EvC please let me know. Edited by Admin, : AbE Edited by Admin, : Another AbE

When I put an equals sign in a message, like this: ≠
And then in the previewed message copy the equals sign and paste it into the message box, it still looks like an equals sign. But I've tried four browsers, and none can make sense of your weird symbol, which displays variously as an empty square box, a box with 0's and 1's inside, and nothing. Can you point me to the webpage that had the not equals sign that didn't cut-n-paste properly?
