Linking to messages while composing a message has now been made much simpler with the addition of message ID's. At the top of each message you'll see the message number. Next to it in gray in parentheses is the message ID. For example, the third message in the
7/9/09 changes - How do you link to a specific message? thread says:
Message 3 of 8 (514893)
The "514893" is the message ID. Simply use the message ID with the new [mid] dBCode and you'll create a link to that message. To create a link to that message with its ID of 514893 I just include this in my message:
[mid=514893]
This will produce a link that looks like this:
If you hover over the link it will provide additional information.
You can also find the message ID by hovering over the link to any message.
I've also implemented a supercharged version of this feature, but have not turned it on. I wanted to get a sense of whether members would like to try this feature. When turned on it causes message ID's, thread ID's, forum ID's, and member ID's to be displayed. These ID's can be dragged and dropped into message boxes, or you can right click on them and select "copy", then paste it into your message box. The new dBCodes are:
- [mid] for messages
- [tid] for threads
- [fid] for forums
- [mbrid] for members
The new codes are also documented in
dBCode Help.
The ID's make it easy for an entire code to be inserted into your message. For example, drag-n-dropping one of these ID's into your message would insert the entire code including brackets, e.g.:
[mid=514893]
I can turn this feature on if there is any interest in giving it a try. It can always be turned off again.
A planned enhancement is to allow members control over whether ID's are displayed or not.
