Please Abolish Member Rating

I had a rating of 3.5, then someone gave me a 3, now my rating's gone up to 3.6!If I keep getting 3's will it eventually go up to 5?

I had a 3.8 before I joined this thread.

Develop thicker skin.Why do you care about the rating system at all? I agree that it is pointless, but so is getting upset at receiving a low rating from vindictive people.Do you really need something as vacuous as a rating system to feel good about yourself? If you do, the EvC rating is the least of your troubles.

Aka Taz (Tazmanian Devil) decided to onezy every message so I did the Christian thing and went though and fivezied all of Taz's onezies to clean up the mess he made here of the rating system. I onezied all of his to even out his onezies with mine. Therefore Taz and me end up with onezies and the rest end up with threezies or so.

And thus the meaninglessness of the member rating system is further illustrated. When a 1 line post by me can recieve the same rating as one of RAZD's great posts from the Dates and Dating topics and also match the rating of one of Buz's posts that are so full of stupidity that they threaten to cause mental retardation in the reader it is clear that the system is useless.

Jones, the system isn't meaningless. What is meaningless is when Taz gave everyone ones because Taz is Taz. Sometimes he's cute. Other times tazmanian devils need to be reigned in.Twice I explained why I gave you and others a five-er; that it was to counter Taz's rampage antic.

When I change the rating system over to the Post of the Month option, the current system will still remain an option, but one we won't be using here. However, the current system will also undergo changes that take into account what I've learned while it has been in place. In fact, it is so I could learn its strengths and weaknesses that it has remained in place despite complaints. Some of the changes to the current system:

• There will be a time horizon settable by board administration. Ratings older than the time horizon (3 months, 6 months, whatever) will be dropped from a member's rating, though they'll remain with the message ratings.
  ​
• Indiscriminate message ratings will be detected (don't ask how quite yet, but I have some ideas) and the member's message rating permissions removed automatically by the software.
  ​
• You'll be able to get a list of who rated a message and what rating they gave it.

When complaining about the current system keep in mind that discussion boards survive by making themselves into interesting places to be. In that light ratings systems can be one source of interest and even controversy that keeps people coming back (just for the record, here at EvC Forum I prefer to avoid using approaches that inherently generate controversy). This board was never as active (about twice as active as now) as when we had unlimited discussion of moderator actions, and much of that extra activity (about 50,000 posts per year) was moderation-related.

On a serious note, I think it's meaningless because intellectual and scientific truths aren't governed by democracy. Please shoot me when they are.In essence, it's just a popularity contest. And since this forum is lopsided on one side of the debate, guess who's going to have a tough time with the popularity contest?

Sure it is, Taz arbitrarily gives out 1s and you arbitrarily counter those with 5's. His 1's aren't based on the content of the post and neither are your 5's.Though I'm going on about the member rating system I do want to make it clear that I very much appreciate all the time and effort Percy puts into this place.

That's not happening in all threads. Taz hijacked the system here for whatever reason. The only reason I went through and raised his ones to threes is because he indiscriminately tagged ones, regardless of content. If he was trying to make a point, he was selfishly doing it at the expense of others, disregarding the welfare of other members who's ratings were affected adversly. Some do care about their ratings and think that the system would work if the members do not abuse it.Percy's improving it along the way. Perhaps there will come a time when it will be fine tuned to work very efficiently and difficult to mess up.
