This may sound very weird but it's a genuine question.
I've recently become intrigued by the fact that so many women walk around with their arms folded (crossed over their belly). They do this in all kinds of situations and weather - even when it's hot.
It's something I must have seen all my life but never really noticed before. Now I have noticed it I see it all the time.
Men may often cross their arms, but only when they are sitting or standing still. I don't think I have ever seen a man walking with his arms folded. It would be so odd I can't even picture it. I certainly could never imagine why I would want to do it myself.
Is there an evolutionary or biomechanical explanation for why so many women do this?

Self-Comforting
Are you talking about this arm-cross?
Besides self-comforting or if one is chilly, there is also the times when the wardrobe may not be functioning well. Crossed arms help keep everything in place.
Sometimes it is due to being self conscious of ones shape or the spot the kid just left on one's shirt.
Sometimes we just don't know what to do with our hands. Our pants don't always have pockets. When I don't have pockets I tend to cross my arms.
Sometimes my purse starts to annoy my shoulder and I cross my arms to change the stress point (usually when I don't have pockets).
Those are just a few things I thought of as I walked through the kitchen with my arms crossed.

I can honestly say that I don't recall ever having seen that.
Granny Magda may have me pegged:
Maybe you should just quit staring at their boobs...
but I'm going out this afternoon to do some research. If I get arrested or slapped, it's your fault.

Sharon (your avatar's Sharon Stone, yes?) is crossing her arms.
I can honestly say that I don't recall ever having seen that.
I think there's a psychological case study in here somewhere...
Have a good one.

She isn't walking though.

Once again, it's patriarchy
Women are trained by our society to take up less personal space than men, so they keep their arms in and sit with their legs crossed, even when they're wearing pants.

Wow! I didn't even know that women were trainable. Thanks for the tip, dude.

Why wouldn't they be? Of course, you have to get 'em young:

Re: Once again, it's patriarchy
Gee, you mean you can train women with pretty pictures in glossy magazines? I figured it would take actual cosmetics, or at least small fish dangled over their heads.
How did you become so wise in the ways of training women?

I asked a few of them. Simple, really.
