The actual quote is a little bit different. The gist is the same, but I am a stickler for historical accuracy.
quote:
I read no newspaper now but Ritchie’s, and in that chiefly the advertisements, for they contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.

Not sure if actually Lee
I have heard before that Lee said this, but I have never been able to find an original source. Do you have a source?
As I remember I think it may actually be a Jefferson Davis quote, or at least some have attributed it to him. I might just contact Washington And Lee University to see if it is an actual Lee quote. I have always been curious so I guess this is a good time to find out.

Re: Not sure if actually Lee
Just heard from Rice University. It is not a Jefferson Davis quote. Still waiting to hear from Washington and Lee University to see if they have anything.
Artemis,
No source? I'd love to track this down if a real Lee quote. As a bit of a Civil War buff, I would love to see the context and who he said it to.

Re: Not sure if actually Lee
I think your estimation is a little simplistic. Lee was the elite of the elites. As were all the vast majority of leaders in the Confederacy. It is a very important reason why VA, NC, AR, TN, KY and MO left.
Ever hear of the Missouri Compromise?
Lee was fighting for his home and his culture which were both predicated on slavery.
Do you think the quote is a fair representation of reality?

Re: Not sure if actually Lee
yes me too. I hope you find something.
The point I am trying to make is that before you attribute a quote from someone you should know the original source. There are a lot of misattributed quotes on the internet and until I see the original source I am going to assume it is not Lee.

Bogus quotes
I am just responding to your spurious quotes and unevidenced assertions. Like I always do.

Re: Not sure if actually Lee
lmost no one on here links thier quotes to the original source, so I guess you do not believe any of them.
Well there are a couple of reasons I question your quotes.
You are notorious for spurious quotes.
Also, I research all the quotes that are advocating a political viewpoint that are not sourced. Amazingly, they all have some basis in reality, except for yours.
Your Reagan quote is an actual quote, but you did misattribute it. It was not said by President Reagan, but rather by private citizen Ronald Reagan, before he was even Governor of California. It was a speech for the Goldwater campaign in 1964. A correct attribution would make it clear that it was not from Reagan while he was President. But I am sure you didn't know that at all.

Actual sourced Lee quote
quote:
The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence.

Re: Jefferson On Media
Please give the source. I can find no reference to put this with Jefferson. If I am wrong please let me know.
The only thing I can find is something similar by Pulitzer.

In other words
You have no source.
You're not going to find everything last thing any of the founders said via Google or any search engine. I got this from a book or another source which I considered to be reliable when I was younger and have been citing it from time to time since.
Don't be a condescending ass. I am well versed in research. Almost verything Jefferson wrote is available on the internet. Search engines are not the only way to find things like this. University libraries are online and actually quite easy to research. Ever heard of the University of Virginia?
When you find that book let me know. You have used this lame excuse in the past.
I got this from a book or another source which I considered to be reliable when I was younger and have been citing it from time to time since.
Just because you have stated this in the past before does not make it correct. Cite a source, if you can't then quit attributing it to Jefferson. It doesn't even sound like Jefferson.
If you can find a source I will retract my remarks.

Actual Jefferson quotes on the press
quote:
"The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure." --Thomas Jefferson to Lafayette, 1823. ME 15:491
quote:
"Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it." --Thomas Jefferson to John Jay, 1786.
Home - Thomas Jefferson - LibGuides at UVa Library
Notice how I can show where the quotes came from and I can even provide a real source. A fairly reputable source at that.
Also you will notice that Jefferson does not have the fear of the press your spurious quote implies.

Roger Waters original I believe
Your lyrics seem pretty close to what I understand them to be. One issue I have is that I do not believe it is "and then Craig Marion", I believe it is "And then cried Mary".
The heavy Scots accent is tough to understand.
