I am not seeing in your quote, where he uses "without" with respect to amino acids. I clicked your link and it doesn't take me anywhere, though I assume you were probably referring to

In any case, I think we are getting sidetracked. Surely the main problem with his paper is in his dubious arguments for irreducible complexity in the proteins, rather than in what he says about the origin of amino acids.
