I imagine that the name Kurt Kaltreider is not one that immediately springs to mind as a current American author, but he has two books (and a third in the works) looking at the difference between modern western thought and how it effects our lives and the point of view of many Native Americans.
The first book was "American Indian Prophecies, conversations with Chasing Deer" and the second "American Indian Cultural Heroes and Teaching Tales".
Kurt has always been an interesting person, once most famous for his near daily sayings that somehow appeared on the blackboards of Mr. French's and Mr. Young's English classes.
quote:
If every day you try to do a little more than was expected from you,
pretty soon, you will be expected to do a little bit more.
The books continue the insight he showed even as a teen and through the medium of John, a young college student who spends his summer visiting Chasing Deer, an old Cheyenne/Lakota elder and keeper of the true history, to contrast societal attitudes. It is a view of being part of the world, of nature, as opposed to being the master of the world, of nature.
On the off chance that anyone has read them, I'd love to hear your opinions. If as is more likely, no one has read them I can heartily recommend them as a glimpse into the world and mind set of Native Americans.

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Re: Sounds Interesting
For the first, First printing was in 1997, 7th printing in 2007; the second was First printing 2004.
