I was just wondering- commonly, I find myself reading a long post, and unless the poster is well-known to me, or else the stance is immediately obvious from the content, I find myself losing where that person is going. This can really happen when a conflicted topic can suddenly take a neutral turn, and I find myself wondering who is saying what, and for what reasons.
So, perhaps there could be a kind of belief box by the poster's ID, like, "Beliefs: Atheist/Jehovah's Witness/Buddhist/etc."
Just a thought.

I think that is a terrible suggestion.
You shouldn't be judging a post on an inevitably inadequate strapline that pigeonholes the poster in question.
If you want to join a debate do so and ask questions to clarify.
But doing a "Aha person X is a 'placepigeonholehere' so they must mean Y" is just lazy and of no benefit to anyone.

Pidgeonholing
To be honest, I wasn't considering anything like pidgeonholing to be a reason for doing this. I guess it would just make it easier to understand where someone was coming from. I didn't mean to seem as if I wanted to just prejudge people. Thanks for the input, though.

Atheist.
Not so people could think, "He's an atheist, therefore he must be a good guy/immoral/whatever," but so that they could instantly see my background as well as some insight as to my viewpoint.

Re: Pidgeonholing
Just to be a pedantic arse.....
What are you an atheist towards?
Do you not believe in gods? Do you disbelieve in gods? Are you certain that no gods exist? Or do you think that the existence of gods is improbable?
Are you atheistic towards alien life? Or does your atheism literally apply only to theistic entities (i.e. gods)? What about fairies? Leprechauns? Immaterial Pink Unicorns?
Now don't get me wrong - I think I know exactly what you mean. I suspect that you consider all unevidenced entities to be deeply improbable (or something along those lines - correct me if I am wrong). But then I too would describe myself using the term "atheist" and I know from harsh experience that those who disagree will ascribe to me all sorts of positions that are not mine based on that description.
So I guess my question is - Does "Atheist" convey all that you think you mean to those who disagree with you?
Does it matter to your point/suggestion?
Maybe. Now I am just late night ranting.

Re: Pidgeonholing
I honestly have no problem with your [ranting]blah[/ranting], so no, you're not being an arse.
I don't suppose that you could get all of that information from just one word that the poster self-identifies with, but I do think that you could get a rough sort of idea of their background. At the very least, it could make it easier to keep track of which side is which.
Thanks for the criticism!

I have seen pages of posts and still felt no nearer to understanding where someone was coming from.
I would vote a "no" to this suggestion as I feel it would bring nothing but inaccurate assumptions to any discussion.

Yes, I was in agreement with you.
To make it clearer: I agree with what Straggler said.
Maybe we should have some kind of box at the side of our posts saying whether we agree with Straggler or not?
