Captain Beefheart January 15, 1941 — December 17, 2010
I don't know if any musician qualifies as being "unique", but Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) certainly is a contender for such a title.

R.I.P. Kodachrome
Kodak stopped producing the film last year, and now the last place to get it processed has run out of chemicals. Story here.
My only question, does this mean I have to stop masturbating?

I think I have an undeveloped roll - Sometimes wonder what's on it.
Also have an unshot roll - Maybe I can sell it as a collectors item.

Re: R.I.P. Kodachrome
I guess I can quit feeling guilty about all the un-shot rolls in my freezer. The last couple years I was shooting film it seemed to me that the colors I was getting with Kodachrome just were not as vibrant as they used to be.
I switched to digital a few years ago and have not shot a single roll of film since.
My wife will be glad to have the space in the freezer, but she's pissed about the money I spent on all those un-shot rolls. At least I am not spending $8 a roll to get them developed anymore.

tell me about it. i have a bulk roll of techpan here somewhere, and the chems for it, and i've never used it. i have a roll of original velvia, and two rolls of kodak high-speed infrared in my freezer, and a roll of tmax 3200 that's probably not even good anymore...

That's funny! I have one also, but I shot quite a bit of it back in the day. I had a formula for developer that was very, very fine grain and it was really tricky to develop evenly. Man, I could make huge prints of insects with it! I still have my darkroom and enlarger and sink, but my wife turned it into her computer lab.
I experimented a lot with Kodalith Pan also, still have a couple bulk rolls of it and boxes of 8x10 sheets.
Photoshop and an Epson printer sure took the tedium out of the process.

i've actually never used it. we were talking about it in my history of photo class in college, and i tried to procure some that night only to find it had been discontinued that same day. i came and told my prof, and he said, "oh, here, have a whole bulk roll and the chemistry for it".
I still have my darkroom and enlarger and sink, but my wife turned it into her computer lab.
i'm not giving up my enlarger or film cameras, but i sure haven't used them in at least 5 years.

yeah, it's way easier and faster. but i dunno. it's missing something, i think.

We have two 4x5 camera systems, one a Sinar, and a full Hasselblad system, along with a 4x5 computerized enlarger. All gathering dust.
We haven't used them in years either.

Re: R.I.P. Kodachrome
Yeah, I still have a color 4x5 enlarger, also. And a beautiful Nikon F5 with a data back. I will keep them and my grandson has been after me to show him how we used to do it in the "olden days." I try to take advantage of any time he wants to spend with me. He even likes going out collecting dragonflies with me.
I used to print on Cibachrome. I wonder if it is gone too?

Re: R.I.P. Kodachrome
We have a dry-to-dry Cibachrome processor, also a boat anchor. We could do some good stuff back in the day. Now almost anyone can master the processing with a computer.
But there is still the photo-eye. That's the one thing they haven't computerized yet.
