Just a note on risk assesment
What happened in Japan is tragic.
But for the folk suffering through this disaster the loss of power, loss of communications, loss of shelter, damage to roads that limit resources being deployed, the results of the earthquake and tsunami so far exceed any possible additional risk from the nuclear power stations as to make them seem irrelevant.
I addition, it is not nuclear power that was the cause of that small additional risk, it was the earthquake, the tsunami and the problems they caused that limit response and control even now.

some areas of concern.
Speaking now about US power plants specifically.
We have several units that are cooled using piped water from a lower aquifer. I do not believe any of them (specifically the ones in coastal Maryland and Virginia) have secondary water supply facilities. Should something disrupt the pumping from the aquifers not only would there be direct and immediate effects, but we also now have opened pathways to pollute the aquifers themselves.

Re: Unexpected Tsunami??
Lesson, don't locate mission critical equipment in any single location.

Re: Robot Question
Humans are still relatively plentiful, available and very rapidly reprogrammed and tasked.

And likely that will go on the list for next time.

Re: Robot Question
You need to remember that the problems at the Nuclear Stations are pretty far down the National Priority list. Transportation space for food, clothing, shelter, medicines, general power sources, water, sanitary products all rank far higher than ROVs for the power stations.
The news over here keeps plugging away at the "nuclear crisis" because it is popular, easy to cover and requires limited resources, but that has little to do with the actual nature of the problems facing Japan.

Re: Robot Question
And that's a very important point. It's very possible that many ROV's are being used, for example in search and rescue, even in infrastructure inspection and assessment, and those would have a far higher immediate priority than the nuclear power sites.

Re: unreasonably pessimistic?
And Chernobyl, while a disaster, is really not that big a disaster. Life goes on in Kiev.
