How do ratings work?
It appears to start at 5 and then drop accordingly.
I'm sure there is a discussion somewhere on them, but I could not find any info.

I dont think you start anywhere, someone must first rate a post.
Ratings, imo, should be based on content of msg, many times people rate msgs they dont agree with low even though the content of the msg may be accurate and true. These msg ratings are what is used to make your member rating.

It's not like anyone is going to change their views because a rating is low, so don't worry about them.

IIRC quite a few people think that the rating system was a bad idea from the start. I certainly did, and I don't use it at all, or even pay much attention to ratings.
