Recently, I was helping a friend cut down his tree. I was about 40 feet up on the tree cutting the top branch when it fell. The branch caught one of the ropes and the rope caught my left wrist on its way down. Hanging onto my dear life as the tree tried to drag me down with it, I remembered that the saw was still in my right hand so I frantically used that to cut my left arm... just kidding. I cut the rope to free myself.
What I ended up with was a cut around my wrist from the rope about 1 inch wide and a very sore arm. It completely stripped the skin off my wrist. So, I got a low level infection from it. No biggie. The recovery has been painful but manageable.
Unfortunately for me, the infection retriggered a medical condition that's been dormant in me for years now. And it happens to be a very bad form of auto-immunity disorder. Last time that my immune system went haywire, my vital organs were attacked and I saw the light at the end of the tunnel several times in the emergency room.
Currently, my epidermis is under attack. My life is brought to a screeching halt because of my condition. From head to toe, I look like a burnt victim. And the most uncomfortable part of this is my testicles. My scrotum has turned into a rock, cramming my poor testicles into an uncomfortable small space.
Just thought I'd let you bastards know how lucky you are to not have inherited a genetic defect as bad as my case.
Added by edit.
And people ask me why I don't want biological children of my own. I've hesitated for years to give people a direct answer because I don't want to have to give a long explanation.
People, if you have something wrong with your genes, refrain from pumping out kids. I've met people with genetic defects yet they want to pump out as many kids as they can. There was a woman I met in college who had a recessive gene for a disease that kills kids before they turn 2 yr old. She happened to marry a man with the same recessive gene. So, they went ahead and pumped out 2 kids, both died before the age of 2. At the time, she cried and cried to me that she and her husband wanted so badly a child but they keep dying on them. WTF?

Just curious. What's that a reference to?

Well, I'm afraid literally rubbing dirt onto it would make it 10 times worse. Basically, my immune system has gone haywire. It is overreacting to everything. If I have a gash on my arm, my immune system will start attacking the entire arm. My doctors believe that's what retriggered the condition in the first place. The deep cut on my wrist resulted in a low level infection. My immune system then decided to attack my entire epidermis layer. It's like flooding the whole city because a house is on fire.
Years ago during another auto-immune cycle, I had a seasonal allergy from all the pollens and started sneezing. Well, guess what my immune system decided to attack. Almost died that day.

Hahaha, that's my thought too. Unfortunately, doing physical exercises would also make it worse. There's a chance the immune system will start attacking my muscles if I exert too much force because everytime you exert force you're actually breaking down your muscle.
The best thing I can do right now is absolutely nothing. They're hoping if I just sit on my ass long enough the cycle will burn itself out and I can go back to my normal life. They're hoping I won't have to go through the extensive treatments that I had to go through last time.

Actually, those were some things they tried first. You know how my body responded? Absolutely nada. My body acted as if they weren't there.

I know.
I'm just explaining everything because I've found that people have a hard time understanding what I have. When my body is in one of these cycles, it doesn't respond to drugs that would normally help other people. They finally figured this out after many months and many doctors later many years ago. I'm a special case. They said there's only been a hand full of people with my condition.
I'm also hesitant to leave home because people tend to think I have aids or something. My wife's mom, a nurse, even thought I had some kind of skin disease when she first saw me in my condition. I don't look like the normal auto-immunity case. Most normal cases have hives and stuff. For me, in the span of a couple hours, I turn into someone that's been toasted in an oven. Then sores started breaking out. What it is is my immune system is treating my skin like a foreign thing and it's attacking it.
Sorry, I'm just crying because I'm currently very annoyed at myself.

Haha, I actually don't know. They tried a whole host of things the last time around. I'm a medical term dummy, so I don't remember any of those things. I just went along with whatever the hell they gave me.

Nope, although sometimes the symptoms are similar. What I have the symptoms are very erratic. It's basically just the immune system overreacting at random things. In this particular case, the cut on my wrist has caused my immune system to attack my entire epidermis layer. I'm not exaggerating. Don't imagine a few hives here and there. Imagine someone that was put out in the desert naked for a whole day. I am covered from head to toe what looks like severe sunburn. In this particular case, the immune system is treating like my entire epidermis layer is having an infection even though it's only my left wrist. Boils are starting to develop on my legs. This is why I hesitate to go anywhere. People usually mistake me for some kind of skin diseased person.
In previous cases, what started out as simple sneezing reaction to pollen caused a severe respiratory response. In just a few minutes, my airway was completely blocked due to over swelling of my respiratory system.
It's auto-immunity disorder on steroids. What's weird about it is it comes and goes randomly. Each cycle lasts for about a month to 3 months.
Edit.
Funny story. Couple days ago, in law saw me. She's a nurse and she's seen some bad cases of burn victims. According to her, I look like someone that's been grilled, especially my left arm. We jokingly told her I had a grilling accident, and for a minute she believed us.

I understand where buz is coming from. I really do. I have relatives who refuse to believe that I have is a "real" condition. After all, they don't have it. They think I have too much poison in my body and I just need cleansing.
The problem with rare conditions is most people don't understand or are unwilling to believe its a real condition.
remember that not too long ago autistic kids were just brats.

Re: Such is Life
Actually, to tell you the truth, after the last time around, I've decided to not undergo anymore major treatment. They've presented me with some options (all medical mumble jumble to me). I've decided that if it's time for me to go it's time for me to go. I have a weird perspective on this. I think people who have weird conditions shouldn't bog down the system just to live a little longer. There are people who are dying of very treatable diseases. I want our system to focus more on them.
This is why this time around I've opted for the easiest option they gave me, which is to sit on my ass and do nothing hoping it would just die down on its own. So far, it seems this time around is not so bad compared to the past. I'm actually getting better, even though my body is itching like hell. Thank goodness for anti-itch cream.
Ha, I might actually get better enough for my wife and I to go on our planned vacation in August. Keeping our fingers crossed. We're taking a road trip this time. Driving down to Kentuckistan and then make our way to DC from there. We'll make a few stops for landmarks and stuff before spending our time exploring DC. We're still debating whether to take the littlest dog with us or not.

Re: Such is Life
Most people don't believe me when I say this, but I've never actually tried pot before. I've no interest to. When I became a cop, one of the questions they had for me was if I ever tried pot. I said no. Not surprisingly, they didn't believe me. I really really wanted to say to them to "suck it" after my polygraph exam. I guess in their eyes I either never really tried pot before (not once) or I was a good enough liar to fool the polygraph examiner.
