You can now set your signature to be always on for new messages. Go to your profile page and you'll find a new setting below your signature where you can select whether the signature checkbox for new messages is initially set.

A "linked ID" snivel:
I changed the Adminnemooseus profile to make "signature on" the default. I have been logging in as Adminnemooseus, thus I need to do the "toggle ID" thing (which I did for this message) in order to post as Minnemooseus. Toggling the ID does not toggle the "signature on" default to the Minnemooseus choice of the "signature off" default. Yeah, I know, but that's a tough one. I considered it and decided it would take me more time to implement and be more a maintenance headache than it was worth, but given that you noticed this I'll give it some more thought.

Is there a button we can press to hide everyone else's signatures?
I always liked that EvC wasn't polluted by those things.

You can now disable the display of signatures in messages. On your profile page you'll find a new setting below the other signature settings where you can select whether signatures of messages are displayed.
This feature will only gradually be useful because it only works with signatures of messages posted after this release.

Interesting. Thanks. This feature will only gradually be useful because it only works with signatures of messages posted after this release. The feature works for Message 126 (to which I am replying). It does not work for Message 124 which was about two hours earlier. For the time being, I think I will leave signature as showing.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

Not sure if this has anything to do with the change, but I am playing with my daughter's iPad and logged in. No problem there, but in the area that shows who is logged in, I'm listed twice. One has a bhawes after the ). I logged off the iPad and went to check my computer and both are still there. I even left (not logging out) and went back.
I also logged out and the bhawes then attached itself to AdminAsgara and her name appeared twice. Once I logged back in, her's was normal and mine was double again with the bhawes. ThanksPD

I'm not sure if this has already come up but a lot of the links using the MID tag seem to be broken. For instance my message Message 68 contains such a link. In fact looking at them I can see that the links from the old MID tags still have the cgi version of the url rather than the php, i.e. EvC Forum: Potential falsifications of the theory of evolution .

That's darn weird! There's no "cgi-bin" in the URL (it should be EvC Forum: Potential falsifications of the theory of evolution) and without that the URL would never have worked. I'll investigate.
All URL's in old messages referring to the old Perl board are automatically mapped to the new PHP board, but not if they were bad URLs in the first place. What I have to figure out is how that URL got that way. If it turns out that that bad URL was a common error due to some bug in the old software then I'll just add some more mapping code and they'll begin working.

This is fixed, thanks again for reporting this. It only happened when there was someone logged in as a guest (bhawes was a guest), which doesn't happen often since we have no forums that don't require registration, so this was a good catch.

It looks like I became very economical in rendering the URLs for the MID and similar codes at one point and began using relative instead of absolute URLs. These are now properly mapped and should be working. Let me know if you encounter any further problems.
Thanks for reporting this!

Is there something wrong with the equation used for the rating system?
I gave someone with a 3.9 average a 4 rating on one of their messages and it brought their rating down to a 3.8. That somehow doesn't make sense to me. If the rating given is higher than the user's average, shouldn't that bring up their average by a little bit? If the rating given is the same as the user's average, should that keep their average the same? If it's lower, shouldn't that bring it down? Right now, though, it seems like anything less than a 5 brings down the average. Or have I betrayed my mathematical incompetence on this one? JonLove your enemies!

It may be that you had given another of their messages a higher rating at some point. That means that you could have lowered your own average rating for that poster and that in turn would lower the overall average.
At least that was how I understood the system worked. TTFN, WK
