Re: The Rebuilding Effort
This is sort of a side comment to the Obama supports Ground Zero mosque. Religious freedom or is he being too PC? topic.
Onifre, in message 22, writes:
The thing is that the US government never feels their actions warrent repercussions from those who they shit on. So they weren't "asking for it," they just figured nothing was going to happen because no one had the balls to attack us. So they continued to shit on other countries, till someone said fuck it, and did what they did.
The point of what I'm saying is that we shouldn't lose focus on what happened and lose sight of the reasons why things like that occur. If you fuck with enough people, oppress enough nations, supply weapons to enough tyrannical governments, place no value on the human rights of those in 3rd world countries, eventually, that kind of attitude will bit you in the ass. And at that point, the US government can't start acting like bitches 'cause someone did to us exactly what we've been doing to them for 50 years.
Others have also said variations on Oni's statement, a position I share.
Percy writes:
I hope the New York skyline will become similarly spectacular. I grew up in Jersey across the Hudson from New York City and witnessed the World Trade Center towers going up on my travels up and down the Turnpike. The drab, anonymous, squarish towers were initially criticized, but they eventually became beloved and a symbol of New York. Whatever building replaces the World Trade Center will become the new symbol of New York, but I hope the new Freedom Tower is as spectacular and beautiful as those towers in Philly.
The "Ground Zero" property is private property and thus the owners can build anything they want on it (within applicable laws). They could even choose to build an Islamic mosque - Boy, would there be an uproar then (but please take any such consideration to the topic cited in the first paragraph).
Now, per the "Freedom Tower" concept. Some of the proposed designs had struck me as being pretty extreme, tasteless, and provocative. To me, such is far more offensive than the so called "ground zero mosque" two blocks away from ground zero. Such a "Freedom Tower" would be viewed by Al Qaeda as some sort of insult and a challenge to "knock it over again". Instead, it's time for the U.S. to show some humility.

The "Little Green Footballs" 9/11 reading recommendation

If you were to check out only one 9/11 retrospective today, The Atlantic’s 9-11 Ten Years Later would be a good one; especially Jeffrey Goldberg’s introductory essay: The Real Meaning of 9/11.

My September 2001 musical retrospective radio/webcast show
Tonight from 10pm to 1 am (US central time) I will be doing a September 2001 retrospective of sorts. The music is drawn from a (much longer) program I did Sept. 21, 2001, 10 days after 9/11. If and as you listen, you have the option of adjusting your psyche to that of 10 years ago.
The webcast link is at Site not found · DreamHost. There will also be a playlist link there, if the below link doesn't work.
The playlist - This may not properly display prior to airtime, and the individual tunes may not display until their specific airtimes. As I type this, only the after midnight part of the playlist is displaying.
The complete playlist of the 9/21/01 show can be found here.
For you in far off time zones, 10pm my time is 4 hours from now.

Re: My September 2001 musical retrospective radio/webcast show
Sorry about not getting the plug posted earlier. I forgot to on Thursday night and then wasn't at an internet access until Saturday evening.
No audio archive, other than the cd's I created for the show. I had carefully Sound Forged the whole thing such that the segues were precisely as I wanted them. I spent so much prep time on the thing that the actual presentations was pretty anti-climatic to me.
While the material had little real thematic connection to 9/11, it did (IMO) have a character somehow suitable for the times. My late night programing always tended to have a fair amount of darkness to it, and 10 years ago I decided not to fight any such nature - Embrace the darkness (or something like that). It was a very surrealistic night for me, back on 9/21/01. Even after the original presentation, for quite a while, listening back to the material of the first part of the show would cause me tears.
The music compilation was a full 3 hours, so any talking on my part was on top of the music. Last night, after about the first 1/2 hour, I quit announcing the tunes. Still had to do top of the hour ID's and some underwriting credits, but I wanted to minimize the talk on my part. The last hour was nothing but music.
I could e-mail you the individual tunes as mp3's, and you could reassemble the show. 128 mp3's would total about 175 MB. You would be welcome to post such on your server if you wish.
As outed on the playlist,
Bruce the Moose
ps - I'll be doing another show the last Saturday of October. It may be a similar treatment of the material I presented October 19-20, 2001. That playlist is here. That show was the last show I did at KUMD, until something like 2006 or 2007. Oct. 19, 2001 - Last show at KUMD; Nov. 11, 2001 - Registered at evcforum.net. 11/11/11 is my 10th anniversary as a forum member.
