I don't know about this suggestion --- it's either really easy, or completely impossible. But I was wondering whether old img hotlinks where the link doesn't work any more could be signaled with a default image saying "image missing" or something like that. As it is, reading old posts can sometimes be confusing because the text of the post just carries on as though nothing was ever there at all.
Thanks. Edited by Dr Adequate, : No reason given.

Something really strange happened to my reply to RAZD at Message 96. I am seeing my post look as if it is enclosed within the RAZD post. That looks like a bug to me.

Hi nwr,
Something really strange happened to my reply to RAZD at Message 96. I am seeing my post look as if it is enclosed within the RAZD post. That looks like a bug to me. Yep, saw that too. Fixed it by editing the complete the table coding that I had used at the end, I had inadvertently forgot\omitted the > codes (it was waaay late for me) Thanksby our ability to understand Rebel American Zen Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. Yes, I guessed that it was probably something like that. However, forum software needs to be robust enough to handle user error.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

Are there any boards out there that allow HTML in messages and also detect missing close tags? The easy solution is to disallow HTML in messages, but I think there's at least a few people here who do take advantage of HTML. EvC Forum does have the [table] dBCode, it's covered in the dBCode Doc Page. Screwups with dBCodes have no effect on displaying message threads.

That's a bit challenging in this case.
I was just commenting on the ideal. What is actually achievable is a different question.
Are there any boards out there that allow HTML in messages and also detect missing close tags?
Possibly dslreports. What I think they do, is treat html as a kind of dbcode. That is, they munge the code that users give, and create their own internal html to achieve what the user presumably wanted. As far as I can tell, most forums either completely disallow html, or severely restrict what is allowed.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

That is, they munge the code that users give, and create their own internal html to achieve what the user presumably wanted. It does seem like something that few boards would tackle. It's challenging to implement. I do have an HTML parser that removes disallowed HTML tags and attributes from messages, which is relatively straightforward, but detecting just certain forms of bad HTML and determining the proper correction is more difficult. I could do it, but I'm not sure it's the best investment of my time right now. I'll put this on the todo list. --Percy

Hi Percy
I'll try the db table codes next time.

Yeah, I noticed that the mock html code I had in a post was stripped out. I'll use html symbol codes for < and > in the future. Thanks testing ...

RAZD writes: I'll try the db table codes next time. The table dBCodes have the additional advantage that extraneous line breaks are ignored. The problem with the <table> tags is that if in a message you say something like this:
<table> <tr> <td> Column 1 <td> Column 2 </table> All the line breaks become real line breaks, and browsers put all these line breaks in a single spot at the beginning of the table. In a long table that results in a large vertical blank space just above your table, like this:
If you do the same thing with table dBCodes like this:
[table] [row] [col] Column 1 [col] Column 2 [/table] Then it will not have all that extra vertical space:
You can include HTML code in your message by using the [html] dBCode. Click on Peek to see how the above HTML was included in this message. Edited by Admin, : Rerender for row dBCode bug fix.

Hi Percy, I agree -- the db codes are also more intuitive imho
All the line breaks become real line breaks, ... As opposed to how it looks on a webpage that only shows breaks when specified by or (and where you can ignore unless it involve formating). ,,, and browsers put all these line breaks in a single spot at the beginning of the table. In a long table that results in a large vertical blank space just above your table, like this:
Yes, but I found that if you take out the line breaks that don't affect the cell contents, like this:
This is still bulkier than the db code, with more margin for error.
If you do the same thing with table dBCodes like this:
[table] [row] [col] Column 1 [col] Column 2 [/table] Then it will not have all that extra vertical space:
Not all of them -- there is still one extra line there. The easy one to remove is the break before [row and the [col];
[table] [row][col] Column 1 [col] Column 2 [/table] Then it will not have all that second extra vertical space:
And you can still make it more compact in the reply\peek windows with
[table] [row][col]Column 1 [col]Column 2 [/table]
and with multiple rows
[table] [row][col]R1C1 [col]R1C2 [row][col]R2C1 [col]R2C2 [/table]

Hi Percy
[table] [row][col]R1C1 [col]R1C2 [row][col]R2C1 [col]R2C2 [/table]
Excellent
You want a job testing? Sure, at double my current rate? I'd be happy to help. Enjoy.by our ability to understand Rebel American Zen Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. Join the effort to solve medical problems, AIDS/HIV, Cancer and more with Team EvC! (click)

Seriously, I do need help testing, sometimes quite a bit, and any help I get would be greatly appreciated. If you're okay with it I'll let you know when I release/change features needing testing (naturally they'll have been tested to some extent before release, but the coder often isn't the best tester of his own code), and you can let me know if you have the time/interest at the moment.

I would also be happy to help, way too much time on my hands.
