So, if you don't win the primaries, you'll not be able to run for that party. I don't know that the voting system in paticular is flawed, but other factors that go into it certainly are, like voting machines that are knowingly hackable and knowingly skew results, the fact that candidates can accept money from corporations in whatever amount they wish, and that we are effectively limited to two parties (who are essentially the same).

No, their guy won't win, but it registers the way you'd like the Republican Party to lean if they want to capture your vote. If enough people who felt like you did that then this would pressure them in your direction. Imagine if they had to placate the libertarians as much as they have to placate the religious right ...
