I have an iPad, and it's fine for reading a book, general surfing and portability.
I had a laptop, but I gave that to my sister.
I have a cell phone that could connect to the internet or watch movies, but all I use it for is to make or receive phone calls.
All of them have a camera, but I use my DSLR to take pictures.
When it comes to work though I return to a computer.
I cannot imagine a tool box with only one tool in it unless the tool was a sonic screwdriver.

so my sister tried the iPad
So my sister was visiting the other day and I simply handed her the iPad2 and let her play with it. She was amazed at how easy it was to get used to and within seconds was surfing the web and reading books an looking up her daughters new apartment and making a video of her dog and ...
At the end her judgment was that it was a fabulous device, fun and easy to use, totally useless for much real work but neat none the less.

Not much of a problem since I can't figure out how to even begin the upgrade.

Thanks and if I understood what you wrote the odds are I might be able to do the update.
My device is an iPad2 and to the best of my knowledge I have never plugged it in to anything but a power cord.

That's nice, again, if I had a clue.
On my Mac mini iTunes says it is 10.
I have no idea how to tell what version of iTunes is on the iPad2.
Are you updating on your iPad or some other computer?

Thanks. Apple sure makes life difficult. Makes even M$ seem nice.
Well, started it downloading using one of my windows machines. The Mac Mini didn't recognize the iPad.
Edited by jar, : update

If I knew what a Zune was that might make sense.

Well, woke this morning to a note from apple that it could not restore my iPad. The iPad itself looks just like it did and I have not yet found a way to tell what OS version it is running. Restarted iTunes and it said there was an update waiting. Looks like I am still at square one.

maybe a step closer...or maybe not
So I started over again, told it to start the upgrade, got a popup saying "Accessing iTunes Store" and that is about it. It's been awhile now and still just that message, no downloading update message, no working message, just "Accessing iTunes Store".
Interesting.
AbE: iPad itself just says "Sync in progress".

Okay, some other maybe silly questions.

Okay, but what notifications would I get?
I thought I had a brain to tell me what I should do in some location.
And siri is "I'm afraid I can't do that Dave"? I thought that was only for pod doors, not pads?

iPad is not iPhone is not ...
Makes sense.
I do not want email on my iPad, but if I did, email should go to the email application and sit quietly until I tell it to speak.
I absolutely hate iTunes, perhaps the most obnoxious music player app I have ever come across, utterly insulting and not designed for anyone with even the least ability to think or discriminate.
I have a phone to make calls, and only three people know that number. My land line has an answering machine so I can decide if the call is from someone I wish to talk to.
I play no video or computer games, so that is irrelevant.
iCloud seems useless unless I can decide exactly which material should be replicated on which device.
And WiFi sync does not seem to work at all.

Well, I deleted the iCloud account but the iPad still does not see the computer as online.
