I have found myself calling out, "OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW." But it was the petit mort, not the big one. Pretty big, though. If I said "OH WOW" under those circumstances, I think she'd ask me to stop.

Hi Shadow,
I have to say that Crashfrog's comment about anoxic euphoria seems to be on the money to me. After all, very similar states can be induced in heathy subjects simply by exposing them to the extremne gravity produced in a centrifuge. Centrifuges are typically used for training pilots and astronauts to withstand the high gravity condidtions that they might face in their work. One of the common effects of very high gravity (typically at about 9G) is sudden unconsciousness, a phenomenon known as G-LOC (G-force induced Loss Of Consciousness). During the periods of unconsciousness, subjects have reported similar symptoms to Near Death Experiences; tunnel vision, a feeling of floating, out-of-body experiences and vivid hallucinations, sometimes involving loved ones. Given the similarity of the experiences and the fact that a lack of oxygen to the brain is the main similarity between a dying person and one who is being exposed to high gravity, I can't really see how we can conclude other than that anoxia is the root cause of both G-LOC and near death euphoria. Jobs was probably experiencing being in a beautiful glowing tunnel or some such. It sounds like a peaceful way to go, but I don't think that it has any rational link to Christianity. Centrifuges! Yes, I was totally thinking of centrifuges and not, say, autoerotic asphyxiation. Totally thinking of centrifuges!

Crash, if you see images of your dead family members during auto-erotic asphyxiation, you're in big trouble.

Wow. AbE: Okay, I admit that I exercised literary license to claim exclamations of Oh Wow at such moments, merely for cheap humorous effect. The truth is that the howling leaves no breath available. I'm not noisy. She is. I usually take that to mean I did a good job.

I'd say that wholly depends on what kind of sounds she is making.

As a Roman Catholic I believe in life after death in an existence that is too wonderful to actually know.I wonder, if and what effect , these last words of Jobs had on the memembers of this Forum I suppose that would depend on his countenance at the time the words were uttered, whether peace, puzzlement, pain or apprehension appeared apparent by people present. A friend just spent her father's last day with him as he died in home hospice from cancer. Part of the process was to administer drops of morphine to ease the pain. Made for some very interesting conversations with and comments from him as he drifted in and out of sleep.
Are you sure it wasn't the morphine talking?

Its not just the morphine the whole process of dying takes your mind on a wild ride was there when an ex employee almost died from internal bleeding in his stomach, he did not make an euros worth of sense died 2 times on his way to the hospital used up 8 units of blood but in the end pulled trough, neither did i when i fell 2-3 meters down head first into a pile of bricks cant remember anything from the moment i thought to my self o shit but people tell me i was talking crap whiteout a shit load of sense.

Crashfrog writes: 1) You can't believe that Steve Jobs was seeing heaven, because he rejected the divinity and salvation of Christ and therefore under your church's doctrine was destined for Hell, This ain't necessarily so. What a person does for most of their life isn't the same thing as what a person does for all of their life. Then there is the issue of precisely what is involved in accepting God's offer of salvation - many Christians wouldn't have a problem with the idea that folk who've never even heard of Jesus Christ can be saved. Abraham being one such example.
2) The notion that the living - even the only barely living - can peer into God's realm of the afterlife is a deeply occult and therefore anti-Catholic doctrine. Acts 7

So we must consider that the dying words of an avowed lifelong Christian might mean they ultimately rejected Christ. People always fill in ambiguity with their own preferences, you Christians are just very predictable about it. --Percy
