Re: My take
You honestly believe the conservative base will rally behind a guy that cheated on his wife ...
... wives ...
... been married 3 times, and thinks poor kids should work to eat ...
... is financially corrupt, politically unprincipled, looks like someone poured 200lb of mashed potatoes into a suit ... and isn't black?
Yes. Yes they will. He'll appeal to their core values, namely whiteness, hypocrisy, and whatever Fox News tells them their core values are this week.
It's not the base he's going to have trouble with.

Re: the irony
You must have access to a special secret definition of "ironic" of which I am as yet unaware.

Newt Campaigns For Obama In Well-Thought-Out Move
Here.
Newt Gingrich told a gay man and longtime resident of Oskaloosa here today that he should vote for President Obama.
Scott Arnold, an adjunct professor of writing at William Penn University, had approached Gingrich to ask him about how he plans to engage gay Americans given his stance on same-sex marriage.
I asked him if he’s elected, how does he plan to engage gay Americans. How are we to support him? And he told me to support Obama.
Maybe someone should explain to Newt that he's meant to be energizing his base, i.e. adulterers:
Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich trumpeted the endorsement of an influential archconservative leader on Tuesday, but he also scored the backing of a pro-adultery website.
The site -- Affairs & Discreet Married Dating :: Ashley Madison, which dubs itself "the most recognized name in infidelity" -- announced its support for the thrice-married former House speaker on a billboard.
A picture of the sign, which was installed in the key swing state of Pennsylvania, shows Gingrich with his finger over his mouth and declares him: "Faithful Republican...Unfaithful Husband."

No-One Likes Gingrich, Perry In Virginia
News is that neither of them could gather the 10,000 signatures necessary to be on the primary ballot in Virginia. That's Virginia where Gingrich lives.
On Wednesday the Gingrich camp were gung-ho about their chances:
Gingrich's spokesman said Wednesday the effort to secure a spot on the Virginia ballot was meant to showcase the campaign's ground game.
"It's a demonstration that Gingrich is outrunning Romney in states beyond Iowa," said press secretary R.C. Hammond.
'Course, now that Romney's succeeded and Gingrich has failed, the Gingrichites are denouncing the Virginian system of collecting signatures as a "failed system" and an affront to democracy, something they forgot to mention when they thought it would be the other way round.
Meanwhile polls show Obama beating Gingrich by sixteen points, because he is so awful.

Things Michele Bachmann Doesn't Know
Things Michele Bachmann Doesn'tKnow, part umpteen-zillion-and-six: Things That Just Happened And Were In All The Newspapers.
The president can put abortion pills for girls 8 years of age, 11 years of age, on the bubblegum aisle, Bachmann continued, apparently in reference to a recommendation by the FDA that the morning after pill be available over the counter, which both the administration and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently rejected.
Also, Things Rick Perry Doesn't Know:
Every barrel of oil that comes out of those sands in Canada is a barrel of oil that we don’t have to buy from a foreign source, Mr. Perry said in Clarinda, earning a loud round of enthusiastic applause.

Sinking Ship?
So Kent Sorenson, the chairman of Michele Bachmann's Iowa campaign, has quit to support Ron Paul.
'Chele claims that he's been bribed:
Bachmann said Sorenson made the jump after "he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign."
"Kent said to me yesterday that 'everyone sells out in Iowa, why shouldn't I,'" Bachmann said in a written statement. "Then he told me he would stay with our campaign. The Ron Paul campaign has to answer for its actions."
Hey, doesn't she believe in capitalism? Supply and demand, 'Chele, supply and demand. Market forces, yay!
The Ron Paul campaign denies this, they would wouldn't they? Sorenson's stated reason is that Ron Paul is a Truer Conservative than Bachmann, though it seems a bit late in the day to notice this.
In other news, a new poll puts Gingrich fourth in Iowa, because he is awful.

Things Rick Santorum Doesn't Know
Do you know if you do two things in your life if you do two things in your life, you’re guaranteed never to be in poverty in this country? What two things, that if you do, will guarantee that you will not be in poverty in America? he asked the crowd.
Number one, graduate from high school. Number two, get married. Before you have children, he said. If you do those two things, you will be successful economically.
This is because your fairy godmother invariably attends your wedding so long as you avoid premarital sex.

Things Conservatives Worry About
Bachmann's co-chair of her Iowa campaign, one Tamara Scott, is worried that legal gay marriage will lead to people marrying the Eiffel Tower.
Two points come to mind. One is that someone has already married the Eiffel Tower, so gay marriage isn't going to change anything there.
But the other thing is ... why the fuck is she worried about it? Complete the following sentence: "If people marry the Eiffel Tower, the following dire consequences will ensue ..."
No, I've got nothing either. Really, when you consider all the problems that we actually face, I think the possibility of people marrying the Eiffel Tower is right down at the bottom of the list of things we should be concerned about.

Iowa Decides, No Not Really It Doesn't
Rick Santorum 29,944 24.5%
Mitt Romney 29,926 24.5%
Ron Paul 26,182 21.5%
Newt Gingrich 16,210 13.3%
Rick Perry 12,574 10.3%
Michele Bachmann 6,064 5.0%
Jon Huntsman 744 0.6%
Herman Cain 58 0.0%
Buddy Roemer 49 0.0%
No Preference 133 0.1%
Other 117 0.1%
So, Santorum is this week's not-Romney, Romney is Romney, Ron Paul gets the votes of his usual hard core of supporters and will never get anything else 'cos of being Ron Paul, Gingrich is a sore loser, Bachmann and Perry split the crazy people vote, and Jon Huntsman continues to follow his well-thought out strategy of hoping that all the other candidates get struck by lightning.

A who the frig is Buddy Roemer.......?
The OP is there for a reason.
A better question would be: "Why is Buddy Roemer?"
