Re: José the Well-Informed Voter
Something needs to change. This is my proposal...what's yours?

I already offered it.

Seriously, if you think you local voters aren't informed enough, then get off your lazy fucking ass and inform them.

The difference I see is that it doesn't try and tell you what to think, it merely gives you the data at hand and lets you make your own decisions about it.

Do you think it would be appropriate for me to post a sign at the polls advertising my political philosophy?

I think my proposal is less of an impediment to voting than the new law in WI that requires a state-issued ID card. If you can't make it down to the DMV, I guess you're not good enough to vote.

And I think that such a requirement is ridiculous.

Jon

Re: Perfectly Informed
Nobody wants a free democracy.

Well, that's demonstrably untrue. What about Jon?

And even if they did, there'd still be limits on who is allowed to vote.

Unless you're talking about the trivial cases of children and foreigners this is also not true. There are countries where literally everyone else can vote (with the small exception of those recently convicted of electoral fraud).

Re: Perfectly Informed

I think folk railing against free democracy need to realize that just because a democracy is a free one, doesn't mean that every imaginable decision gets put to a public vote. As in our own democracy, for example, representatives, elected and not, make almost all of the decisions. Some localities and states differ, but for many, the number of decisions that actually get voted on by the people make up a very very slim minority of all the decisions that end up getting made.

And I am actually in favor of limiting this even further.

What on earth for? I think that we all should be able to decide by computer...since most of us now have one.

Huh? What is this a reply to? And how can all make a decision when only most have access to the tool necessary for making that decision?

Well the process should not be limited soly to the computer. Or have public libraries where everyone can use a computer.

Certainly electronic versus paper is not the ultimate of discussions in terms of civics... is it?

Cowards, all. In a just world every Confederate traitor would lie in an unmarked grave, these two monsters especially. The existence of even a single Confederate war memorial is an affront to any decent person.

This isn't the way the three billy goats gruff handled a similar situation.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. The proper place to-day, the only place which Massachusetts has provided for her freer and less desponding spirits, is in her prisons, to be put out and locked out of the State by her own act, as they have already put themselves out by their principles. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)

Re: José the Well-Informed Voter
I already offered it.

Your solution for making sure voters are aware of what the resolution they're voting on this year means, is to send all of them back to elementary school? Strange idea.

Seriously, if you think you local voters aren't informed enough, then get off your lazy fucking ass and inform them.

I believe that's what I'm trying to do.

Do you think it would be appropriate for me to post a sign at the polls advertising my political philosophy?

Are you on the ballot? If so, sure, as long as your opponent has the same ability. If you're not, no, because it matters not a whit.

And I think that such a requirement is ridiculous.

Well, good, we agree on something.
