I'm not so sure Doherty can be considered a scholar, except in the loosest sense. The
Wikipedia article on Earl Doherty says this about his education. This is the entire section:

To refer to Jesus as the Son of God and then launch into a discussion of Mark seems an unlikely mistake for a true Biblical scholar.
