Leonard Pitts recently wrote an editorial, "Cultivating stupidization", that caught my eye about the TX GOPs opposition to higher order thinking skills.
quote:
Knowledge-Based Education — We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.
After going to The Republican Party of Texas And downloading the PDF version of the RPT Platform it seems the wording for the part on Knowledge Based Education, page 20, has been re-worded almost completely from the above quote, or someone is being less than honest in what the TX GOP said. (I personally believe it has been recently changed)
In the section on Controversial Theories, page 19, they promote conflict and debate when it comes to evolution, creation, ID, global warming, and political philosophies. To me this seems to promote critical thinking.
Of course in the current wording of their section on Knowledge Based Education it doesn't appear they 'want their cake and eat it to' . What to believe?

someone is being less than honest in what the TX GOP said.
Pitts is not being dishonest. The editorial said that the language had been released by mistake. Pitts takes them to task for even considering the language and then for not removing it.
From the article...
quote:
For what it’s worth, the Texas GOP says that language was not supposed to be in the platform. Spokesman Chris Elam says its inclusion was an oversight on the subcommittee’s part.

Once again I prove I am a MORON.

Once again I prove I am a MORON.
Even if you are, you are utterly eclipsed in moronicity by the Texas GOP platform writers.

Disturbingly True

Ummm..... I agree, and that is really disturbing.
What is worse is that nobody in the TX GOP caught it, I guess they also don't bother to finish reading things.
In my defense, I bounced around while reading that editorial, looking up more on what Limbaugh, Bachmann and Arpaio had to say. I never made it to the end of the TX GOP piece. I went to their page and noticed the difference and then posted my OP. I'll learn one of these days to slow down and read more before I post.

There is plenty of stupid stuff in the TX GOP platform that is there deliberately.

Fascism & Propaganda
As if anyone needed an official statement anyway to figure out that the current GOP is anti-thinking.
And the 'revised' statement isn't much better. No political organization's platform on education should involve statements on what to teach. That's straight-up Nazi-style, fascist propaganda ideology.
Scares the fuck out of me!
