Even tighter - Current Coleman lead: 188 votes

Nov. 4 Ballots Cast for Norm Coleman 1211590
Nov. 4 Ballots Cast for Al Franken 1211375

Recounted Data	Totals	Percent
RECOUNT Number of Ballots for Coleman (as recounted) 1208935	41.40
RECOUNT Number of Ballots for Franken (as recounted) 1208747	41.39

RECOUNT FRANKEN and Other Ballots Challenged By COLEMAN 3377 0.12

Percentage of Ballots Recounted = 100.00%

So, pending dealing with the ballot challenges, Norm leads Al by 188 votes.
Again, the original election night totals (also listed above):
quote:
Independence DEAN BARKLEY 437404 15.16
Republican NORM COLEMAN 1211590 41.99
Democratic-Farmer-Labor AL FRANKEN 1211375 41.98

A 215 vote gap.
The two candidates have withdrawn quite a few (many hundreds) of those challenges, but they still are in the tally above.
Incidentally, the "lizard people" ballot was for Franken, and was thrown out. There is a statute rule that a voter can't mark his/her ballot in a way that would make it distintive.
Another ballot for Franken (or was there more than one?) had a number of write in votes for FSM and/or the Flying Spaghetti Monster. That/those ballot(s) were accepted as being valid. Apparently the FSM is a valid write in, but "lizard people" is not. Perhaps "lizard person", being singular, would have been valid.

The Wikipedia article of the affair so far
Wikipedia has a pretty detailed article on the affair so far.
It is currently being heard by the Minnesota supreme court. After that an appeal to the US supreme court is a possibility, although I would hope they would refuse to take on the case.

We have a (2nd) Senator
http://news.yahoo.com/...630/ap_on_el_se/us_minnesota_senate
quote:
GOP's Coleman concedes, sending Franken to Senate
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Republican Norm Coleman conceded to Democrat Al Franken in Minnesota's contested Senate race on Tuesday, hours after a unanimous state Supreme Court ruled the former "Saturday Night Live" comedian should be certified the winner.
and
quote:
Coleman could have carried his fight into the federal courts, but it was unlikely a federal court would have overturned the state Supreme Court decision. That possibility created months of intrigue over whether Gov. Tim Pawlenty would sign an election certificate if Coleman continued an appeal a possibility that quickly became moot with Coleman's concession.
Pawlenty said he would sign the certificate later Tuesday.

Opening Statement From New Senate Clown (on Judge Sotomayor's nomination)
Nice speech, with the choicest part being:
quote:
I am wary of judicial activism and I believe in judicial restraint. Except under the most exceptional circumstances, the judicial branch is designed to show deep deference to Congress and not make policy by itself.
Yet looking at recent decisions on voting rights, campaign finance reform, and a number of other topics, it appears that appropriate deference may not have been shown in the past few years - and there are ominous signs that judicial activism is on the rise in these areas.
I agree with Senator Feingold and Senator Whitehouse that we hear a lot about judicial activism when politicians talk about what kind of judge they want in the Supreme Court. But it seems that their definition of an activist judge is one who votes differently than they would like. Because during the Rehnquist Court, Justice Clarence Thomas voted to overturn federal laws more than Justices Stevens and Breyer combined.

Franken & Davis as The Rolling Stones - "Under My Thumb"
Found via Al Franken's final punchline | Salon.com
which included:
quote:
I am worried about Al Franken, President Obama joked in March. How do you start off being one of the original writers for Saturday Night Live and end up being the second-funniest Senator in Minnesota?
Which in turn was found via Al Franken exceeding expectations
I'm not at all sure how much of the guitar playing is actually Davis and how much of the singing is actually Franken.

Al Franken on the NSA surveillance thing (OSLT)
Al Franken supports the NSA surveillance program against americans
As best as I know, that is true (ABE - Make that an agreement if you strike that "against americans" from the sentence).
he voted AGAINST the Amash NSA Amendment (ends the indiscriminate collection of phone and email records) on Wednesday.
I'm pretty sure that was a House of Representatives thing. Franken is in the Senate.
So laugh and deride all you want about Bachmann, because the last laugh is on us 99%ers.
But Bachmann did vote against the amendment.
quote:
It appears that Michele Bachmann has lost favor with Glenn Beck because she not only voted against an amendment that would have defunded the NSA, she argued that those concerned about NSA data mining and illegal spying are completely wrong.
Source
I fully admit that I'm not real up on this whole situation. My main info and support for Al Franken and his position is largely based on this article, which is derived from this article. Video of Al's statement is available via either of these links.
Quoting Al via the first article:
quote:
I’m on the Judiciary committee and the Judiciary committee has jurisdiction (over) N.S.A. and on (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) and the Patriot Act, he said. I availed myself of these briefings so nothing surprised me and the architecture of these programs I was very well aware of.
I think there should be enough transparency that the American people understand what is happeningBut I can assure you that this isn’t about spying on the American people.
Franken, chairman of the Judiciary subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, also said there are aspects of security programs that he should be aware of but the public should not.
There are certain things that are appropriate for me to know that’s not appropriate for the bad guys to know, he said. Anything that quote the American people know, the bad guys know so there’s a line here, right? And there’s a balance that has to be struck between the responsibility of the federal government to protect the American people and then people’s right to privacy. We have safeguards in place The American people can’t know everything because everything they know then, the bad guys will know.
He said that the data the security agency has collected have kept Americans safe.
I have a high level of confidence, that it is usedto protect us and I know that it has been successful in preventing terrorism, he said.
Now I may be falling victim of authoritarianism, but sometimes you need to believe someone, and for me that is Al Franken.
A follow up article of sorts at "Little Green Footballs" says:
quote:
FISA Accountability and Privacy Protection Act Would Curtail Surveillance, Increase Transparency - A reasonable attempt at reform.
Unlike the knee-jerk defund it! of the Amash amendment, this new bill contains some meaty pro-transparency provisions:
quote:
As part of a bipartisan push to reform surveillance laws, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has introduced the FISA Accountability and Privacy Protection Act of 2013. The bill aims to bring more judicial oversight, public accountability, and transparency to the secret surveillance powers used by the NSA and FBI, focusing specifically on controversial sections of the Patriot Act and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The bill is co-sponsored by nine senators, including several outspoken critics of current spy laws, like Mark Udall, D-Colo., Ron Wyden D-Ore., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Mike Lee, R-Utah.

More at the source page.
A little background on the "Little Green Footballs" blog:
Charles Johnson was part of the conservative blogosphere until a few years ago (for whatever it's worth, see WSJ: Franken Stole the Election from back in 2009). And compare the nature of comments then vs the nature of the comments in the current articles.
Anyway, Charles came to the conclusion, and I more or less accurately quote him - "The republican party has gone off the rails and is heading over the cliff, and I'm not going over the cliff with them". Although I'm sure that Charles is still pretty conservative, he has become a severe critic of the republican party, especially the right wing.
Moose
Final (maybe) added by edit:
Concerning the FISA Accountability and Privacy Protection Act. As I understand it, it is assigned to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Patrick Leahy chairman. It needs to be approved by that committee to get to the full Senate. I note that both Minnesota senators, Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, are on the committee. We shall see how things go. Monitor this paragraphs first link page to track things.

Al related plug for KTWH-LP radio
KTWH-LP is a low power station in Two Harbors, MN, that I am heavily involved in.
KTWH carries a show call "The Bookshow", and the Tuesday 09-05-17 guest is Al Franken and his fairly new book "Al Franken - Giant of the Senate".
It's a 25 minute show, and starts at 12:05 pm U.S. central time. To calibrate for other time zones, that is about 14 hours and 15 minutes from this message's post time.
KTWH 99.5 FM – Two Harbors Community Radio - Audio button at page top.

Painful as it is - Bump
I'm not going to take the time to collect links on the story. Others are certainly welcome to do such.
My bottom line opinion -
Al's actions were stupid, probably inexcusable, but forgivable.
Especially in regard to Congress and in politics in general, I think that Al's intelligence/knowledge to stupidly/ignorance ratio is pretty high.

Real soon to be a candidate
Franken was a comedian at the time, and he was helping put on a show to a young and bawdy audience.
Alas, I saw somewhere that the incident(s) happened in Dec. 2006. He announced his Senate candidacy in Feb. 2007.
I don't know what psychosis Al was going through at the time. It really seems to be a case of loss of sanity.
We shall see what further information comes out. But I'm not ready to advocate "ex-Senator Franken" yet. Regardless of how distasteful the incident(s) were, it yet seems like a very brief anomaly in what seems to be an otherwise fine Senate career. I certainly hope there is nothing further bad to come out.

Re: Rush to Judgement with story origin from Faux Noise?
I had a longer message that got lost to a computer malfunction. The shorter version:
I think the photo clearly is staged, maybe or maybe not with Tweeden's awake participation. The photo documented a variety of "bad taste humor" but does not document a groping.
I find it implausible that Tweeden was sleeping in her full combat gear costume, but maybe she was.
Per her other accusations - I do think that her other journalism work with Fox News, indeed her mere association with Fox News, is a serious negative towards her credibility. Maybe she is telling the truth, but would one find the statement "Fox News corespondent lies to make liberal politician look bad" implausable?

Photographer Said Franken Image Was Staged?
quote:
Did Franken Photog Say Groping Image Was Staged?
A fake quote ostensibly uttered by the photographer who took the infamous image of Senator Al Franken and Leeann Tweeden was circulated in November 2017.
quote:
CLAIM
The photographer of the infamous Al Franken image said that the moment was staged, that Leeann Tweeden "was playing dead," and that "she wanted him to ‘revive’ her."
quote:
RATING
FALSE
quote:
ORIGIN
How do you defend the indefensible? One way, apparently, is to make up a fake quote.
In an apparent effort to discredit Leaann Tweeden, the woman who accused Senator Al Franken of groping her during her 2006 USO tour, a quote ostensibly uttered by the photographer who snapped the infamous image was circulated on social media: ...
I think the quote source may indeed be false, but some variation of the "quote" content is still plausible.

Re: The other woman
Because Franken's hand was on her shoulder, and they had to hide the fingers ...
Devils advocate mode:
Of course, this might be a photoshopping by some left winger, to make it look like some right winger had photoshopped the image.
The image was photoshopped to remove the fingers that were not actually in the original picture. It's part of the liberal coverup.
Or something like that.
Franken is being "swiftboated" and maligned with false information, in an attempt to deflect news from Roy Moore child molester, pedophile and statutory rapist, and to provide false equivalence to gaslight people, especially voters in Alabama, into thinking it's ok to condone\vote for despicable Moore.
Or to cripple Franken's efforts to oppose the right wing agenda, such as weakening net neutrality.
Not to mention, Fox News sure must still be grumpy about that "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" book.
