It looks good on the video. However, I am not at all sure of what really happened.
As far as I know, it is not normal for cats to be protective of children. I've heard of a cat going after a bird, and if a child (or adult) happens to be in the way, then the child (or adult) will get a bit scratched up.
Dogs protective of children -- yes, that happens. I'm not so sure about cats.
A cat going after a dog -- yes, that happens too, but usually not to save a child.

Yes, this was my guess.
You occasionally see that in people, mostly noticeable in the hair color. DNA testing for a chimera would be interesting for this cat.
