Author | Topic: Ugandan laws on homosexuality | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I've only been to Uganda twice in my life. Both times I flew from Jo'burg to Entebbe (Kampala) return.
Both times I noticed that the planes were full of Faith-type, very loud, white American evangelists on the way there, but full of very reserved black persons on the way back. It puzzled me the first time; but the second time I initialised conversation about it and talked to a few people on the way to Jo'burg (a 4 and a half hour flight). It was mentioned that the anti-gay laws prompted some to legally emigrate to South Africa. These were well-educated Ugandans who happened to be gay. And they also had some money. Why do they find it necessary? One of the answers was something such as this: Attention Required! | Cloudflare
quote: In SA gay marriages are legal. I mentioned and talked to some people about those fundies who thought that they could gang-rape lesbians to become 'straight' in SA. They all said they would take their chances; they could try to avoid thugs in SA, but can't even try to avoid the Government in theirs. The Government spies in their country are everywhere. My questions about it. Why would the Governments of the US and the countries of the EU provide billions of Dollars and Euros and Pounds as "aid" to the thugs in power in Uganda? Religion? Stop it. Rather try to get rid of those thugs making those laws in the Ugandan parliament. Don't give them any money. Coffee House please. Edited by Pressie, : Changed sentence

What else are they supposed to do? Condemn their equally valid cultural norms? Impose no-better Western values on them? That'd be a little too illiberal, don't you think?Love your enemies!

Evidently you have difficulty understanding a few things. The Uganda laws are being instigated by US (Western) Christian Fundamentalist. If it were laws imposing slavery do you feel no one should say something also?
The west continually attempts to impose Western values on other nations. Why do you think this situation should be different? Because it is just the gays? You have been attempting to sound like an arch conservative lately but you are missing the mark. You are sounding uneducated, vindictive and full of hate towards those different than you.Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts "God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

Saying something and cutting off funding are two different things. The question of what to do is a difficult one. Uganda imports more US products than it exports to the US. The aid from the US is primarily in the form of education and health care. Who would be harmed by the US cutting off aid funding to Uganda?Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

I believe the proper response to Uganda's homosexual laws would be to increase the aid sent to Uganda.
Right now only 1 million dollars a year goes to Democracy and Governance and only 2.5 million to Education and Social Services. We need to at least double those amounts, increase support to youth and new political parties, increase education particularly of women and encourage building an informed citizenry that can oppose policies like the homosexual laws. Stop letting Christian Fundamentalist be the ones teaching the kids.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Pressie writes: Why would the Governments of the US and the countries of the EU provide billions of Dollars and Euros and Pounds as "aid" to the thugs in power in Uganda? It would be easier to explain why the US government gives full support and financial/military aid to human-rights-violating-countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia (not a democracy) is a violently repressive country to its minorities (not just gays), and is a current supporter and exporter of terrorism (the overwelming majority of 9/11 attackers were Saudi Arabian). Be-headings and stonings are a typical daily activity. So why, oh why, doesn't the corporate media, with close relationships to the business elite, industrial military complex and congress, report this to the population? Why were the following pictures of american presidents holding hands with a king-monster never newsworthy in america?
(Gosh, if only the 99%ers could receive news from the great and humanitarian supporting BBC in america.) Edited by dronester, : added additional presidents pictures.

Maybe the US ought to yank a few fundie passports. Americans shouldn't be dabbling in foreign lawmaking (unless they're the CIA, of course).

I've tried to respond to you but I cannot. I'm fairly convinced you misunderstood the meaning of my post. Well, I can translate, I speak conservative. Pressie: in the insane confabulated world in Jon's head, all liberals are extreme moral and cultural relativists who will stand up for any culture as being right about anything from killing gay people to FGM, and therefore he can taunt you for inconsistency in thinking that killing gay people is wrong. Of course, he's never met any liberal who is an extreme moral and cultural relativist, but I guess that just shows how inconsistent and hypocritical we are for never ever advocating in any way the position that he ascribes to us.

He was responding to me, but I am quite sure you hit the nail on the head.

LOL
The same way we do now. The money is not just given to the Ugandan government but rather to low level local organizations. Look at the link I supplied and it provides details of how the aid is organized. The important point is that if we do not do the educating the Fundies will.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!
