What has changed?
People are pissed at wars where people die, so the best way to keep the war profits going is to have a cold ware with Russia again, and just in case something goes wrong it would be a good idea to be on better terms with the neighboring ally of Russia.

Marco Rubio is screaming that normalizing relations does nothing to help the impoverished Cubans. This is stupid. Neither does maintaining the status quo. At least if trade someday resumes the tourist industry will be a boon as well as the tobacco and rum industries there.

LOL well actually i am. The US and Russia both want a cold war again. The US profiters profit, and Putin solidifies his power. But none of them want an actual war as the end would be The end of modern civilization. Even if they decide that no one uses nuclear weapons, the day one side would not see a way out and defeat was inevitable they would push the button. Edited by frako, : No reason given.

The first thing I thought of is that it will help the Cubans more than the Americans. The Americans will gain yet another sunny clime to escape to, and they'll get the cigars, and they'll be able to divert some of their insane paranoia to Iraq and Afghanistan. But the Cubans will get access to a huge trading partner right on their doorstep. They already have one of the most accessible healthcare systems in the world (import THAT, USA); maybe now they'll be able to improve the quality.

It might be. But I'm not in favour of undermining the Castro government.

I didn't want to put it quite that bluntly. I also didn't want to say that the Castro government is (one of) the best that Cuba has ever had because I don't know enough about Cuban history. I think I can say with confidence that the Casto government has been better than the gangsterism that it replaced.
