Re: Berkeley resources
Not all that fat. Remember, by the "and one, two, three for me" step she had three M&Ms in front of her and I had six.
She didn't get too fat (it was hard in those days before MMORPGs and more than three TV channels kids wjen still played outside to get too fat) but she sure did learn all about adding and subtracting and without either word being spoken.

Re: Berkeley resources
I know, we only watched TV about an hour before bed.
I would have peppered them with so many questions that
they would have thrown the whole bag at me in frustration
and I would have at least a mouth full before they realized
they left they left the bag with me.

Re: Books
If he's reading at a 7th-grade level, then he should probably be okay reading most adult books.
I've heard said, though never really investigated, that most popular books for adults are written at about a 10th-grade level. I just saw that A Brief History of Time is on the NY Times Best Sellers list. I've never read it, but if it is written to be on a list like that, the reading can't be too terribly difficult. It's an older book, though. Other than that, I don't know anything. I read books on history, politics, and religion. I just finished a book on coal and am working on another about the industrial revolution and another about the Great Divergence.
If he's into geology, I had a few books on identifying rocks and minerals as a kid. They weren't really something you could just sit back and read, but they were good references and presented many opportunities for teaching myself about the rocks I found outside.
Really, I'm impressed that he is reading at such an advanced level. Way to go for him! Most 9-year-olds are just taking that step into using reading as a tool for learning; he is clearly lightyears ahead of his peers.
Anyway; best of luck and Merry Christmas!
Jon

Re: Books
Hi Jon,
I started reading to him the day he was born, I always
carried a book with me. His mom ended up in ICU after giving birth so my sister, her and I took turns sitting with them and I would read to them both whatever book I was reading at the time.
His parents got him a book on rocks & minerals and 1 on volcanos. I read A Brief History In Time when it 1st came out and donated it to the H.S. library after I finished with it.z
They live in North Pole, Alaska but are going to move to Valdez, Alaska next spring for more job opportunities, and there are volcanos closer that his family can take him to so he can explore them.
P.S.
He picked out a LONG list of books from every ones suggestions that I had to call and give them my credit card info, so I imagine he's ordering away as we speak!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
