Does a restart have any effect?
How are you trying to bring up Task Manager?
Have you made any changes to your software or hardware?
Can you get to your installed programs list? Is there anything in there that looks suspect?
Any browser problems (changed homepage, link ads, etc.)?
Some antivirus can be run from a CD or jump drive; this might be an option if you can't get anything else to go.
I've solved problems on Windows 8 a couple of times, but not enough to offer much help.

Re: In Defense of Us Luddites
Actually, if he feels more comfortable staying with 7, I see no reason to update.
You may not, but MS sure will when they drop support and force everyone to upgrade or be left vulnerable.

Re: In Defense of Us Luddites
ABE: I just realized this was in Dr. A's computer help thread. If you reply, can you, please, post it in the Windows 8 thread? I really think Dr. A deserves his thread to stay devoted to helping him with his computer problems!
What does dropping support mean? MS dropped support for xp and there are still plenty of people using xp without the sky falling.
The sky will fall on them in time. Look at how MS talks about XP:
quote:
"Windows XP Support Has Ended" from Microsoft.com:
While it's true that you can keep using your PC with Windows XP after support ends, we don’t recommend it. For starters, it’ll become five times more vulnerable to security risks and viruses, which means you could get hacked and have your personal information stolen. Also, companies that make devices like digital cameras, Internet-ready TVs, and printers won’t provide drivers that work with Windows XP, so if you get new devices, they won’t work with your current PC. And over time, the security and performance of your PC will just continue to degrade so things will only get worse.
They could have more honestly worded all that as: "what you have works just fine for you but we're going to do everything we can to make you update, and if that doesn't convince you, just remember your computer is old and smelly; so you better buy our shiny new turds anyway, grandpa".
I'll tell you this much. My company's official OS is still xp because it is run by a bunch of anti-tech old men. It's doing quite well, actually.
More emotive nonsense. There's likely a reason they are still on XP other than because they are "a bunch of anti-tech old men".
Why don't I want Windows 8?
  • First, the computer I use works perfectly fine, but it would be a paperweight if I got Windows 8 because I'd have to buy a new machine.
  • Second, I've used Windows 8 and found it no better at sending emails, typing documents, entering data in spreadsheets, keeping track of photos, and pretty much everything else I do on my computer, both the useful and non-useful stuff.
  • Finally, Windows 8 is full of bells and whistles that do nothing but eat up memory and processing power. New computers are pretty powerful. But so much of that extra power just gets sucked up by the fancy OS, and, as I've mentioned, half of its features (like those that might work well with a touchscreen) are useless for most applications.
I would imagine that many of these reasons, and more, keep companies from updating from XP/7 to Windows 8. There is so much cost associated with the upgrade and hardly any real benefit.
Improvements are great. But most of the new stuff necessarily peculiar to Windows 8 was designed specifically to increase MS's competitive edge in the phone OS market (which I said earlier, but you said was wrong, despite the fact that it's true):
quote:
Wikipedia on Windows 8:
Windows 8 introduced major changes to the operating system's platform and user interface to improve its user experience on tablets, where Windows was now competing with mobile operating systems, including Android and iOS.
I know Bill Gates is probably getting low on $100 bills for heating his home, but that's no reason for businesses to want to buy into his planned obsolescence.
Just like if you hate laser and gps, then by all means continue to use string lines.
The nice thing about levels and chalklines is that they don't require batteries.
Why force the rest of us to stay behind?
No one's forcing you to do anything. But any company with a decent IT department can manage an open-source OS. MS will find out the hard way that planned obsolescence of software doesn't work so well on those customers who can simply make their own.
Which means that the ones who 'stay behind' won't be the companies that don't want Windows 8, but the greedy software developers who put profits over performance and practicality.

Re: In Defense of Us Luddites
Look into LibreOffice (used to be OpenOffice) freeware.
OpenOffice is still there; I just downloaded their most recent version the other day. It looks more like LibreOffice is a separate package built from OpenOffice source.
I'm gonna have to download it and see what it's all about.

The one I downloaded the other day was called Apache OpenOffice.
I don't think the Oracle one exists anymore...

Re: open source office suite programs
Let me know if you think the Apache OO Suite is better?
I can, but my opinion won't count for much. I don't use the programs regularly enough to be really familiar with them. There was something I was trying to do with OO a couple of years back that I found to be a pain in the ass compared to Word, and I sort of abandoned using it for day to day stuff.
I wish I could remember what that was, because I'd give it a try in the new versions.
Downloading Libre now; I'll let you know my first impressions. But, I will tell you this: Apache's was about 130 MB and Libre is 214; so there's a difference right there.

Re: open source office suite programs
I am using them both now. When I installed Apache's version, I looked through everything to make sure it wasn't pulling any stunts. I wish I would have done the same with Libre, because it redid all my file associations .
I don't think I use enough special features to really notice a huge difference between the two.
One thing, though, is that I notice neither give me the option of inserting asterisks, daggers, etc. for footnotes. I don't get why that is absent. I do like how Libre has some frequently used things in the toolbar (like special symbols). So it wins me over on that.
Remember that excel formula you helped me with a while ago? Well, I loaded that document into both of these programs and I liked Libre better here too. I have several categories for expenses, and with MS and Libre, I can enter just the first letter of the category, the rest pops up, and I then Tab to the next cell. Apache doesn't let me do that for some reason. I either have to type the whole thing in or use the mouse to click over to the next cell. It really slows things down.
Based on these little things, I think I'd use Libre over Apache. But I still can't get over them both lacking the asterisks for footnotes... it's so strange.
ABE: For comparison, Apache requires 650 MB of disk space, Libre 1.5 GB, and MS (according to their website) 3.0 GB!

Re: open source office suite programs
Curiously I went to insert footnote and chose the "character option" and entered "*" and it worked fine?
Yes, but MS does it automatically, keeping track of which footnote you're on. Which is especially helpful, because once you get to the daggers, the only way to insert them is through the character menu. Word counts up just like with numbers, only using the symbols, going from asterisk to dagger, etc.
I do, and that is one place where MS is better because in Libre you have to manually insert the $ signs.
Maybe your version is older than mine, but I can enter -50 in a cell formatted for currency, and it will automatically switch to ($50.00).

Re: Making bitrate attribute display a default
Try this:
  • Show Details view
  • Right-click where the detail headings are; select 'More'
  • Add the options you want to display
Any luck?

Re: Making bitrate attribute display a default
Maybe a glitch?
Mine works fine.
I know this sounds simple, but are you sure the window has been made wide enough to show all of the data you are looking to show?
ABE: Never mind what I just said, I realize now you can see it in some places.
I think I found the solution. Open the folder where you've displayed bitrate, etc. Click Tools>Folder Options>View>'Apply to All Folders'
This will apply the view settings to all the folders on your computer.
I got it from here: Winhelp.us

Re: Audio problem
I've been unable to get sound for any video I've tried to watch this morning. Tried everything I can think of. I have a new wireless keyboard and mouse my nephew set up while I was away. The problem may be there.
Those things shouldn't have caused the problem, but without knowing for sure what your nephew did the possibility cannot be ruled out completely.
What OS are you on?

Damn ClearType - Again
I'm so sick of this damn ClearType business.
What the hell is the point of it? It's the worst possible solution for something that was never a problem.
But anyway, now I need to get ClearType completely out of IE9, but at work. The IT folks there don't seem to know what I'm even talking about, so I guess I'll be solving this on my own.
I've seen solutions about downloading .dlls and editing registry values, but those fixes aren't possible on my work computer .
Interestingly, I managed to turn off font smoothing for the most part by disabling some visual effects. Now there is no smoothing on the desktop or in certain parts of certain documentsand some fonts in IE9 now render without CT, but the majority are still blurry as hell; most Word fonts are also fine, but headings for some reason are still blurry, though I can live with that; taskbar buttons are also blurry, but I use IE9 the most so that's the place I really need a full fix.
So my question is how to get this nastiness to disappear for good. I have read about possibly using CSS and then setting IE9 to use a default CSS through the Accessibility options, but I would have no idea where to begin with that, and I don't want to completely remove all the visual effects (like buttons and boxes, shading, etc.) by putting in a bad CSS.
It's Win7 and IE9.
I appreciate any help!

Love your enemies!
