RIP Ornette Coleman
Ornette Coleman was the free jazz alto player whose eloquent, eccentric music has always meant a lot to me.
ABE: I seem to recall Moose liked his stuff. Any other fans here?

Re: RIP Ornette Coleman
A great OC summary statement, stolen from someone else:
quote:
There's talented, there's influential, there's great...and then there are those at the top of Mt. Olympus whose cultural thunderbolts sent down from on high just change everything. And so it was with Ornette Coleman, who just died at age 85.
Someone who is on the relatively short list of most important jazz artists ever.
The still living old jazz titans that I recall: Sonny Rollins and Cecil Taylor. BTW, I read somewhere that Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor once attended a Grateful Dead concert together. If that's true, too bad that they didn't sit in with the band.

RIP The American Dream Dusty Rhodes
One of the legacy members of the WWE has passed. Dusty Rhodes, the American Dream, Virgil Runnels (Real Name), has left behind a legacy in the form of two of his sons, Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and Stardust (Cody Runnels), currently being starts within the company. The man was a mentor to many of the stars as they began to work in the company, as well as a big hearted character who always had time for the fans. RIP Dusty, The Dream has passed away...

A couple of versions of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman"
The first is the original, Ornette Coleman - alto sax, Don Cherry - trumpet, Charlie Haden - bass, and Billy Higgens - drums. Via Youtube:
The second is by Diamanda Galas, just her, piano and voice (no words) - Pretty intense, so watch out (louder also)*.
http://music.duykhanh.me/...Lonely-Woman-Diamanda-Galas.html
Many years ago, I overdubbed these two version into 1 piece. Came out really good and makes Diamanda more accessible.

Great stuff! Here, John Zorn's Naked City turn "Lonely Woman" into a Lower East Side big-band noir noisefest:

Sir Nicolas Winton
He wasn't overly famous, but , what he did to, is save 669 Children from Czechoslovakia from the Holocaust. He didn't even talk about it for 50 year, until his wife found his notebook and notes about it.

Hoppalong Cassidy
William Boyd and Hopalong Cassidy – Once upon a screen…
quote:
William Boyd and Hopalong Cassidy
After nearly 40 years of riding across millions of American TV and movie screens, the cowboy actor William Boyd, best known for his role as Hopalong Cassidy, dies on this day in 1972 at the age of 77. In tribute here’s a flash look back at Boyd and the iconic Hopalong Cassidy.
Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy on his horse, Topper
William Boyd became the first cowboy actor to make the transition from movies to Television with the premiere of the Hopalong Cassidy TV series in 1949. Despite the fact that the networks wanted little to do with what they thought was a fading genre Hopalong became the seventh most popular show on TV and merchandise based on the characters and show sold like hotcakes. The program would also usher in a long array of Western shows that audiences loved.
My favorite early TV western.

Re: Jumbo
You forgot to mention that Jumbo was so big he actually derailed that train.
