"The Far Left Side" ending and going away
Forbidden
In this situation, I feel it's only right to quote everything from that page:
quote:
Aloha!
There's BIG CHANGES coming to my little progressive popsicle stand and I thought all you lovely people deserved a semi-thorough explanation of what has transpired and what is to come. But first, a little history.
As many of you know the Far Left Side began back in 2006 with the peculiar notion of taking one of Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons and giving it a politically progressive slant. I enjoyed the result so much that I created more of them, and people liked them. Although I slavishly aped Mr. Larson's style for a year or so there were, in fact, only ten actual Far Side cartoons repurposed in this manner and none after August of 2008.
Four years later, in 2010, I received an unexpected email from Mr. Larson's lawyers. They were concerned with what I was doing but they were very pleasant about it. The last paragraph from them read as follows:
"We will not ask you to remove the cartoons that already appear in your online archives, but we do ask that you refrain from copying Mr. Larson's artwork and captions in the future."
This was fine with me as I'd quit copying Mr. Larson's cartoons way back in 2008. I had rather quickly shifted to a more personal style as it was easier to draw though I occasionally inserted some Far Side background characters in my 'toons, namely a handful of his lumpy, bee-hived matrons and what I later learned to be a character named "Billy the nerd-boy".
Six years raced quickly past and in early 2014 I decided that it was time to make a Far Left Side book, so I assembled all the pieces and sent the file to Mr. Larson's legal representatives to ask permission to print. After several suspenseful months of silence their reply was as follows:
"Uhhhhhhhhhh.... no."
In fact, I was summarily instructed to remove any infringing artwork from my web site, kill the book, and hand over the domain name, farleftside.com. I felt these demands seemed rather unreasonable in lieu of the earlier permission I'd been given but it was subtly impressed upon me by Mr. Larson's counsel that there were loopholes aplenty and they were all around my pretty little neck. After several months of pleading, begging, and outright whining it became clear that my legal resistance was futile so I have handed over my sword.
Consequently, farleftside.com will go offline very soon and there will be no Far Left Side book. In addition, several dozens of my older cartoons will disappear although there's the faint possibility that I may redraw some of my favorites.
But be not dismayed for a new web site, ragingpencils.com, will soon replace the old one, possibly as soon as this Monday, and my thrice-weekly spleen-venting will continued unabated. I'm currently doing my best to iron out the technical burps and, so far, most of the lights are flashing green. The domain name, farleftside.com, will continue to be accessible for some time though you'll be magically transported to ragingpencils.com if you type it in or click a bookmark.
The single greatest casualty, in my opinion, is that all of your past Comments will be lost as there's no sane way to import them to the new site. Sorry about that. (There's an outside chance that a technical exploit might do the trick but I won't know if it will work until the Big Switch occurs. Cross your fingers.)
On the positive side, this means I'll now be free and clear to create all the books, t-shirts, and progressive kachinka dolls bearing my images, logos, and/or baby pictures that I wish.
Freedom!
As you might guess this situation has weighed heavily upon me over the past year and it has definitely affected any enthusiasm for my work. The financial repercussions of this situation could have been (and I stress the following word) devastating but, I have to say, Mr. Larson's counsel has been more than reasonable. Even, dare I say, nice. Sometimes you bite the bear, sometimes the bear bites you. In this case, we just played a little strip Twister.
I briefly considered keeping this lurid information all to myself, allowing you to believe that I was simply rebranding the site for artistic purposes but you who faithfully attend my measly attempts at political discourse deserve the truth, as do we all. Besides, it will be entertaining to read this prolonged snit again ten years from now.
Aloha.
-----------
Final ponder: In January of 2006 the space probe New Horizons was launched. Two weeks later, my first Far Left Side 'toon appeared online. Now, nine years later, both enterprises have run their primary course and will soon fade into inky blackness. Yes, far fewer people have heard of the Far Left Side than New Horizons but it's amazing what you can do with $700 million. Grin.
-------------
I premiered a new comic at the Friendly Atheist on Wednesday so click here or the teaser image below to see the rest of the crappy thing.

Apologies if this has been posted before.
As Erwin Schrdinger cruises down the highway, a patrol officer pulls him over for a suspicious-looking car. The officer strolls up to Schrdinger’s open window and asks for his license and registration and whether the Nobel laureate will allow a search of his trunk. Schrdinger pops the trunk and the officer looks around. Approaching the window again he asks, Are you aware you have a dead cat in your trunk? Angrily, Schrdinger replies, Well, I am now!

He has told you, O man, what is good ; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God.

Next the officer stops Heisenberg for speeding. "Sir, do you know how fast you were going?"
"No, but I know where I am."

Nellie McKay: TED Talks Kinda Suck
Not-so-famous-anymore New York vegan cabaret songbird Nellie McKay gave a TED talk that was no less silly and implausible than the usual, but at least it was tuneful. Would Tony Robbins be brave enough to croon falsetto about the only appeal scientific progress has for rich narcissists? Was that Hawking guy 'inside' enough to drop references to Phil Spector and the Olson twins in his TED talk? Will cloning technology allow the flavor-of-the-month chanteuse of the future to sign with two record labels simultaneously, or is Schrodinger's paradox simply a different breed of cat? Hit it, Nellie.
Edited by MrHambre, : No reason given.

He's everywhere.
Woman sees Donald Trump in her tub of butter
That's odd. I saw him just this morning floating in my toilet--made me concerned for my health.
She should worry, too.

The Search For Dark Energy Chameleons
the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe writes:
The latest experiments in the search for the source of Dark Energy peered 1,000 times more closely than ever for particles called Chameleons. Their theoretical ability to hide themselves may explain why they’ve never been detected.
https://www.theskepticsguide.org/...r-dark-energy-chameleons
The first paragraph of a short article just struck my funnybone. I would never have expected to read on a legitimate science web site something as silly as, "Their theoretical ability to hide themselves may explain why they’ve never been detected."
